2018 Traverse 36k miles same issue as everyone on here but dealership is saying it isn't covered to fix and weld the exhaust. Any help would be great. This should be a recall by GM. Maybe if we all call and demand they will issue one. At least a refund for your payments etc. 800.462.8782. But if anyone has been successful getting this covered and fixed please share.

Did Chevy cover yours? They told me today it isn't covered and I have to pay out of pocket. Do you mind sharing your write up? I was about to call GM because this sounds like a universal issue.
See and download the document in post #31 in this thread, print it out and then hand it to the service guy. It is totally unacceptable that he was not aware of this...100% covered / GM known issue ..It's more work for them to have to file with GM and they probably don't make as much money on the repair when being paid by GM rather than what they price gouge their customers...Evil I tell ya.....EVIL!

Was on phone all day going back and forth. I have 2018 so the letter won't help me but I am going to use the letter to complain to GM since there is no difference between 2018 and 2019. Esp.since my miles are super low.

Did you see post 31? Make a copy and take it to the dealer.

BTW if you live in California it is also a law that any and emissions issues must be guaranteed for 7 years from the purchase date of a new car. That's how I got it fixed the first time. Dealer told me no way because it was salvaged. A simple call to the air resources board and a short investigation and magically it was completely covered. Thieves I tell ya! Look me straight in the face and lie to me. I also spent weeks dealing with GM direct before I went to the state and they gave me the same song and dance.

I just had the same work done today. My 2019 Chevy Traverse has 54,000 miles. All work including replacing my muffler, catalytic converter and pipes were covered under warranty. I hope I don't have further problems. Love my traverse!

My 2018 Traverse had the same issue. The dealer and Chevy refused to cover it because the VIN wasn't covered under the 2019 letter (even thoughts the same parts). I called and complained, and they said maybe if enough people complain they will expand the special coverage, but until then anyone with any other year besides 2019 is out of luck.

2019 Chevrolet Traverse 2WD 33,223 miles, ~41 months: Noticed "puttering" sound while at idle which got worse over time. Took it to dealership as I figured a blown gasket. "...front muffler and pipe from front cat to front muffler cracked causing the exhaust leak. Replaced both pipes and gasket..." Was quoted ~$1800 for repair (extended warranty stopped at catalytic converter) but service writer negotiated co-insurance from Chevrolet with ~$200 out of pocket. Service writer could not say whether the replacement design was modified for better longevity.

Folks, read your warranty coverage. It's also available online at Chevys site. Here is an excerpt from the '18 manual.
Knowledge is power, get the power....

. Your vehicle is registered in California or other states adopting California emission and warranty regulations.* . Your vehicle is certified for sale in California as indicated on the vehicle's emission control information label. * Important: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington have California Emissions Warranty coverage

100% true but sure meant nothing to my dealer until I actually reported them to the California state authorities....It took some time and effort on my part but then all of a sudden everything was covered...weasles gotta weasle

Would you be able to provide a copy of your invoice? My chevy service provider is saying GM won't cover the muffler (which they originally stated the muffler and the cat and another part would be covered when I agreed to the repairs). Magically when the repairs are completed and time for pickup, it is not covered.

You didn't say what State your are in but if they gave you an estimate that said they were replacing the muffler at no charge they must honor that. In California all emmisions are covered for 7 years from the day a vehicle is first sold. The muffler is part of the emissions system so the dealer would need to replace at no charge if there was something wrong with the muffler...My question is why did they replace the muffler? It has nothing to do with this issue. I would ask that question and ask to for the muffler they removed so you can take it to a independent 3rd party to see if it "really " needed to be replaced. That will get their attention. Lastly if you are in California and they tell you no way just contact the air resource board and they will get you covered...it will take a month or so of back in forth but in the end your dealer will have an extreme change of heart and generously take care of you Homepage | California Air Resources Board

I have a 2019 Traverse LT with 83,000 miles and the bracket has broke off and ripped holes in both of my pipes.

The first one broke away in February and thinking that it wasn't covered I just put an exhaust clamp on it to hold it back in place. In April I got the recall/special coverage notice in the mail. Before I could get it in for service the other side of the clamp pulled a hole in the opposite pipe.

I got it into my local dealer and they said it wasn't covered because "something must have hit the clamp and broke it off". Terrible dealership that I'd had issues with in the past concerning service.

I took it into the dealership I bought it from and they called me today saying that one of the pipes is covered but the one with the cat is not. To repair that one will be $1400.

Why would this "special coverage" only cover one of the pipes and not the other? They are both having the exact same issue.

I called the 800 number on the notice and she told me the same thing. It clearly says the front exhaust pipe.

So, I guess I'm going to patch it and wait and see if a "special coverage" comes along for the other pipe because I'm certainly not paying $1400 for this BS.

I live in California where the complete exhaust system must be warrantied for 7 years...no if's, and's or but's about it... Of course the local dealer and Chevy corporate said I was wrong until I went to the California air resource board who enforces that 7 year emissions related warranty in California...It took a month or so but suddenly I got the red carpet treatment...I'll be darn it's covered! That said, when they did the last under warranty repair they replaced both pipes and cats... ( see the picture below) I am not sure why these dealers play these games cheat you out of money games but I suspect it is because they don't make as much $$$ when they do a covered warranty repair as much as when they are able to stick it to us out of our pockets...after dealing with my local dealer I trust them as far as I can throw them. Lips are moving it's a lie.... The recall covers the failure of that bracket and that bracket is attached to both pipes....I'm calling BS on your dealers lame excuse and reasoning. Report them to the state agency that deals with automotive repair in your state. Be polite but be clear you disagree and are going to explore all options to be treated honestly and fairly. I suspect mine is on it's way to its third failure ( they did not double up the weld on the factory supplied replacement as they were instructed in the recall) When I asked the service guy if the had he told me they don't do welding at this location..... Why do the job right the first time?

Good luck!

Here's a picture of what they removed and replaced

Mines leaking again...I have notified Chevy and am in holding pattern... I'll post an update once I hear what they come back with. Chevy has admitted there is a problem with this set up...A bad design that is destined to fail again and again. The definition of insanity is repeating the same action over and over and expecting a different result. That certainly applies on this issue. All they are doing is replacing the broken pipe with a duplicate of the original bad design...it will fail again and again and again.

For all non 2021 Chevy Traverse models impacted with this same issue here is what you should do:

Contact the National Highway Safety Administration and provide them with details (broken bracket / exhaust) and include this number in the description N222385510 to show how GM is addressing this on only the 2021 models, even though the same issue is applicable to other models. They will investigate and this is how recalls get initiated.

Here is the number: 888-327-4236
