Same problem.. Power Steering Wine

2009 LT1 Traverse 14,000 miles

2010 dealer replaced Rack and Power Steering Pump

2011 dealer replaced Rack twice, another Power Steering Pump, Power steering line mod. (longest its lasted was three weeks)
Car went back in three other times for alignment, shaking, steering wheel not centered (now I'm told that the tires are cupped, steering wheel still shakes interm. and I have alot of tire noise)

I am taking my 2011 Traverse in on Monday to work on the steering wheel noise. They said something about flushing out the lines, vacuum or something. I am very worried at this point that it will be in the shop all the time working on this issue. Does anyone know if GM has come up with a solution to this? I know some of these posts I have read are from last couple of years, so hoping there has been a better solution at this point. Thanks

Doubt it. I went for a test run yesterday with a master tech to compare the PS whine on my 09 OUTLOOK vs a 2012 Enclave with 4 miles on the ODO and guess what....it sounded the same.

This is terrible that it seems that fixes are not surviving. I do not want to be a tester of "what might work". :banghead:

At 12k on the clock and still power steering whine like day one. Ridiculous.

My '09 Outlook has the new power steering pump and steering rack, and it has been updated with Dexron VI fluid (vs. the "standard" GM power steering fluid). According to the WO, the bellows on the Steering Rack was leaking, and the Power Steering Pump had leaking seals. I brought it in because the pump was groaning.

The following P/N's were installed:

20964165 Gear (Power Steering Rack)
22847737 Hose
20954812 Pump

Note: The Dexron VI fluid can only be introduced when the steering rack is replaced, otherwise the pinion seal will be more prone to squeak:

Keep in mind the repair order will "state" whatever is necessary for the claim to be paid .

So is there a new pump design as well as the larger hoses relating to TSB P10029F? I just had my rack replaced and system flushed and DexVI, but no new hoses or pump. I'm afraid I'll be one of those that goes through several racks before the dealer realizes there's an Updated TSB out for this problem.

Ours is going in this week to have the steering TSB performed. I am in contact with the Tech and will verify what fix is applied. Dealership was very familiar with the TSB when I mentioned it to them, so hopefully this fix is the right one. Fluid swap, power steering rack swap, hose swap, he stated.

Hoping for success, as our truck has had the steering wheel whine since day one (we noticed this upon delivery, as compared to the several lambda's that we test drove during the purchasing experience)... but now have enough things on "the warrantee list" to justify being without the truck for a day or so.

... working through the system to see what can be done. ???

Just had the steering issue TSB done on my 2011 with only 8000 miles on it. It would have been nice if they stuck on a sticker or a new power steering reservoir cap indicating to use the Dexron ATF and not the normal PS fluid. My dealer always tops off my fluids when I take it in for service so I'll have to make sure they know to use the correct fluid. The dealership does great work but they have put the wrong (short) oil filter on twice now. The service advisor always put clear instructions on the work order but it seems the mechanic never bothers to read it.

I went back to the dealer, when the upgrade was done, and asked for something for the reservoir. I was given a round yellow tag to install under the reservoir cap. I have also had trouble getting the dealership to install the larger filter. They told me that the specifications that they show, either filter can be used.

My dealer told me the same thing about the oil filter. I told the dealer I want the filter that is specified for my Traverse.
If GM changed to a larger filter there had to be a good reason for it.

I'll have to ask my dealer about the tag for the PS cap. Thanks for the tip.

Here is the link to the thread that has talked about the oil filter in the past. Please, check out my findings in post #36.

So what's the good word? How is the steering now that the repair has been completed?

I didn't get the tag either when I had the repair done. I just used a paint marker on the cap and wrote Dex VI so I would remember since I'll be the one swapping out the fluid anyway.

That's a good question. I haven't heard any updates from zepcom either. How are you doing?

It's been about 3,000 miles since the new rack, pump, hose, and Dexron VI... no issues to report.
