This is almost a verbatim copy of post I made in another forum (not specific car related). I thought I would share it here also.


I have 2017 Chevy Travisty SUV. It's my work horse vehicle used for several tows a year and hauling whatever I need. I don't particularly like the car but it does the job.

Had my last oil change at 9500 miles by a certified GM shop (not the dealer) back in February . They use GM specified all syn oil. I trust this shop explicitly as they have done lots of work for me on other cars.

Over two weeks ago my "change oil soon" message came up on the information center. Because I wanted to have the tires rotated and all fluids check and the dealer had a special oil change price, I decided to make an appointment with them for the oil change. I now have nearly 13,000 miles on it.

The best date they were able to fit me in was Sept 13. It seemed like a long interval but my reasoning was that because it's synthetic oil, it has a long mileage life and the extra time involved should be OK. Besides the "timer" warning is based on time and not actual oil integrity, or so I was told by the dealer when car was purchased and by many other "experts" in the field. But I do believe synthetic oil can go an easy 10k even with hard use.

Now I'm having second thoughts if I did the right thing. But since it's only 6 days away at this point it's not a big deal.

My rant part of this post is that the best the dealer can do is 4 weeks appointments for an oil change to maintain the warranty? That stinks and it bugs me. It seems to me that a dealer should make appropriate conditions to have quick service oil changes to maintain warranties. And oil changes should not be tied into the same schedule as other service work. Since there are hundreds of quick lube places that don't even need appointments, why can't a dealer that begs to do your service work have a quick oil change?

Note this dealer is the largest dealer in the state that has all brands and makes of cars. This includes, Ford, GMC and almost all foreign brands. They are also very prominent in other states around the country. Clearly too big to care about the customer! In the future I'll go back to my trusted shop.

PS...I've had problems with this dealership in the past and know many other people that have also. I wish I could publish the name but I think it's against the rules for this type of thing. So why did I buy the car from them? That's a whole other story worthy of another post.

Norn. You are perfectly safe to wait for the date you posted. The oil that is mentionned on the cap of your dip stick is a semi synthetic oil. Unless you ask for full synthetic oil they will put the semi synthetic. I change my oil when my monitor tell me that I have 50% life left because I hardly use the car just like you. My 2017 has only so far 8,000 miles. My motorcycle and my bike are my mostly used vehicles in summer .

I was told they put in all syn.



Maybe you can clarify something for me. Does the oil minder, monitor just time as the dealer and service mechanics tell me, or does it also monitor number of starts, temp and impurities? I hear so many different stories. Most people tell me to go by mileage as the best indicator and use only time if it goes beyond 6 months. It's what I've always done.

The oil monitor is not a timer to tell you when it is time for an oil change. It works with how the engine is used. If you only do city driving and small runs the life of the oil will be shorter. For people always on highways mostly you monitor will makes your oil last longer. Do the test in winter and you will see a large difference with summer months. For your oil going full synthetic is the way to go but an oil change cost more. You recover your money by a longer life. The only drawback your monitor does not know the difference between regular, semi synthetic, and full synthetic so you get the same life on all oils. For me no matter the mileage when my monitor show 50% I change it. For the small mileage I run it does not makes much difference. Same if the gas would cost $4. per gallon it would not burn my wallet either. Lol.

The OLM is NOT a timer.
It is a mathematical formula, an algorithm.
Uses many inputs to calculate oil life.
Engine RPMs, engine temps, etc etc.


There was an issue in the 09s and 2010.
GM recalibrated the OLM and the max miles is now limited to about 7500 miles now.
the cars from 2012 or so and up-- require DEXOS compliant oil.
Most of which nowadays are SEMI SYNTHETIC.


I really doubt the dealer is giving you FULL synthetic- unless youre paying extra for it.
Most likely youre getting the Semi syn.


On my 2013- 3.6, I ran a bunch of used oil analysis to test the OLM.
Every time I increased the mileage/OLM % and had oil analyzed.
I was using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic.
Each time the oil came back in good shape for the miles.
Eventually I ran a test with 0% OLM (it was 6500 or 7000) miles on oil.
Analysis came back with the oil still having life left.
So I trust my OLM and change oil when it hits 0%.




Now-- remember the OLM are calibrated for the type of oil the car calls for.
Meaning that my OLM is calibrated for Dexos (which is Semi Syn).
Other cars like say the Corvette- call for FULL Syn.... and those OLM are calibrated for its engine and Full syn oil.

The elephant not discussed was a dealer that can't handle an LOF without a four week lead time. Most dealers have a lane dedicated to LOFs and many don't even require appointments and offer reasonable service times. I had a dealer that I bought new from and loved their sales and service depts. Moved to a new town and wasn't impressed with several different dealers service (or sales) depts. I ended up finding an ASE certified shop with great service and even better prices. Don't put up with service you feel is subpar, you will always be doubting.

Dexos 1 gen 2 is full synthetic, which is what they started making sometime in '17. I don't believe semi-synthetic dexos exists anymore, other than old stock.

This morning I went to my regular shop and had the oil changed in twenty minutes. They used full Syn (which my car requires), tire rotation, all fluids, etc...


I called the dealer to cancel my Friday 7:00am appointment. They claim there never was one. Of course I have an e-mail verifying the appointment. I think it's the last they will ever see of me.

X2 way to go. When a dealer dont keep track of their client appointments they can loose business. I was not aware that the dexos was full synthetic now. Will call my dealer fo find out what kind of oil they use now.

Yup, the Dexos (GM Braded) oil is now Full SYN as I checked with my dealer last month. He said they previously used Valvoline Syn-blend, but switched over 3 years ago. I've always had the dealer change oil as they gave us the $17/lifetime changes when we bought it new back in 2012 and I can't change it myself that cheap. I was shocked as that's a really really good price for full syn and I've had an oil analysis done on mine and it shows it's holding up really well at 6,600 miles as that's when the OLM told us to change it. Blackstone recc'd to take it to 8500, but I'm going to stay safe and stick with the OLM (as we've always done) since I have over 110K miles on it now.

Just a quick follow up and comment. Since my Ford Escape need a state inspection I took it to my local Ford dealer. Just by coincidence the time interval was due for an oil change but the mileage was not even half way. I asked the mechanic if he thought it was necessary to change it. He sure if you want, but it's not necessary. He told me that if I don't put on the miles by Dec. then bring it in. Don't worry about it. Today's oil can handle typical driving condition well past their time and mileage due date.

Regarding your appointment, something is drastically wrong, either with the dealerships scheduling procedure or your interpretation of the appointment date.
If you’re interested in continuing with this dealerships service dept., ask to speak to the Service Manager or the Service Director, sometimes known as the Fixed Operations Manager.
Something is either drastically wrong or misinterpreted .

My dealership has a quick lane. Twenty minutes for oil, under hood liquid top off, and tire rotation. About $50. If not done in 20 minutes it's free.

This afternoon I get a call from the Chevy dealer asking me to confirm my oil change date for tomorrow! I told the girl that I cancelled the date and was told at that time that it was never reserved for me in the first place. But that I had an e-mail confirming it.

I then went on to tell her that because it takes 3-to 4 weeks to get an oil change appointment, that I took the car someplace else and was done in 20 minutes. I then told her that I was not trying to give her a hard time, but every time I have tried to work with xxxx dealership, there always seems to be a issue. I told her I will not be returning as a customer and to please relay this info to the management.

She was very polite and said she would. Who knows?

Was at my dealer yesterday and asked about the dexos if it was full synthetic now and they said yes. Since I dont put many miles on the Traverse the time lap can go almost over a year and my oil monitor will show that I am still good . Dealer said that as long as the oil change dont go over a year period I am still good. Personnally I will have it changed before a year period to be on the safe side.

I believe I read that the manual says 1 yr - change the oil- regardless of OLM...
or was it the OLM that will also indicate change after 1 yr- regardless of % left.


hmmmmm, I dont remember which
