I'm betting a dime to a doughnut that it WASN'T Chevy's idea. There is a collection of self-proclaimed "geniuses" somewhere around Maryland and Virginia who cooked up that poisonous stew.
For sure on that.

This turbo 4cyl will likely burn as much fuel as a 3.6L, but will emit less tailpipe emissions. At least on paper. What a win! Yayyy!

Like 4cyl turbos or not, get used to them. Manufacturers aren't going back to naturally aspirated V6s.

One decent thing about a 4cyl is a single catalytic converter vs 2 or 4 with a V6. CARB compliant CCs are $1500/ea these days if not more.

We just drove back to NY from Florida this week. I drove between 75 - 85 (hit 90 a few times) most of the trip. My wife drives a bit slower, maybe 5 MPH over the limit. I checked the MPG by hand when she drove, and we got 26.3 MPG on that tank. Total MPG as shown on the DIC for the trip home is attached below. This is my '23 with the 3.6 liter V6. I don't see much, if any advantage of MPG improvement by them switching to a 4 banger.

Another thing I do not understand is the supposed reduced emissions with the 4 cylinder. I have 6 cylinders using basically the same amount of fuel as the 4 cylinder. Doesn't that make the 6 cylinder more efficient and cleaner burning than the 4 cylinder?
I hear you on the fuel efficiency of the 2018-2024. I've had my 2021 LS AWD from Buffalo NY to Columbia SC and back a few times. Loaded with gear, high speeds, lots of mountains to climb and descend and still got 26-27mpg tank to tank. The vehicle is just an absolute pleasure for long road trips.

In terms of the fuel consumption between the 3.6 and 2.5T, an engine could burn more fuel, but actually produce less tailpipe emissions. It's an odd concept, but reality today.

In a vehicle the size of a traverse, I too would always prefer an NA V6. On the other hand, I very much love the little 1.5T in my 2021 Equinox. It's perfect for my needs and this size vehicle. It is the first turbo engine I've ever owned. You wouldn't even know it's there with this particular engine. You can't hear it. You do feel it in mid-range acceleration. The little thing really goes for a puny 1.5L of displacement. Floor it and get it near redline and it sounds like something is going to come unglued, but the 3.6L is no different in that regard IMO.
