Well I got 10 months & 20,000 miles from my 2010 Traverse before it quit.
Towed it to a shop and I just got the call that the timing chain is broke and there's damage to the heads. Cost of repairs and parts $6200, a reman engine replacement $8200.
Both options are greater than book value of truck.

So a couple questions:
  • Is the 3.6 an interference engine that can be damaged when the timing chain breaks?
  • Do these quotes seem reasonable?

Sorry to hear.
The $6200 repair sounds high... based on others repair posts. But their posts are for a stretched chain.. $4500 comes to mind. But yours is a broken chain.. that could have caused damage that raises your price.

how many miles on yours?

I traded in my 2010 with 193k miles last week. It was time to move on. I didnt want to run into a situation like yours .
I had ordered a 23.
It may be the last year of the 2nd gen.
The new ones are already testing in the wild. But if its new design and engine etc... i wouldnt have bought one until at least 2 model yrs to weed out the bugs. So maybe 2026...so i jumped and ordered the 23.

I was in luck, my 23 was below msrp, theres a $1000 GM rebate, and the only item affected by the chip shortage was the rear park assist.
Something to consider.

Interference engine - YES

Repair/replacement Quotes: Both quotes seem awfully high. Numbers here on the forum in the past for remanufactured seem to run about $3K for the motor, IIRC. I'd get a second (and maybe third) opinion.

Maybe someone who's done it will respond.

I agree the quotes sound high. But today everything is high.
1 year ago I bought this truck for $8000. Had 104k on it, no rust. All used cars & trucks were overpriced 1 year ago.
As my past posts show there were a bunch of minor problems that I dealt with before I felt it was "done". Probably put another $2k into it, most of that was new Michelins.
It now has 122K on it.

I don't know if "cheaper to keep her" applies in this case.

Check your local Wrecking (Auto Recycle Yard) for one out of a recked car.. $2500 to $3000 for 50K to 70K miles...
