Help Needed / 2010 Traverse / 6 broken rocker arms / All on same cam

18100 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  repairman54
my wife pulled her 2010 in the drive way, shut it off, went in the house changed, and then went to leave. the car would not start... she called me and I came home when I turned the engine over I could tell this sounded bad.. very flat with no sound of compression.. took in for service and denied warranty for lack of proper oil change records. (I do my own) the fight got so bad the dealer had the car towed back to me with a note that said Chevy does not want to participate in the repair.. I placed the car in the garage and it sat for 2 months this past weekend I took the intake off and the forward valve cover to find all 6 of the rocker arms on the same cam broken. (we are one the forward valve cover with the duel cam.) the 6 rockers broke off the rear cam in this valve cover. all the valve springs are in place it just snapped the rockers.. can I just replace the rocker arms and move forward or am I missing something.. I took the caps off the cam and you can move it to replace the rocker arms. I also found it very strange that this happened on the same cam. any help and or ideas . thank you..

Sounds like the cam got out of phase, valves slammed the pistons and broke the rockers in the process. That's about the only theory I can come up with. Valves are probably bent and pistons probably have a nice imprint on them. I'd pull the head at least if you plan to do anything yourself, and see what the collateral damage is.

I'd also raise **** about denying the warranty regarding the oil change, as I do all my own too. Do you reset the oil life monitor at each change? The Traverse is my wife's car so we've kept OnStar on it, but I can pull up the OLM reset history going back to 2010. If you don't have OnStar, I wonder if maybe a reset is stored in the PCM?
Sounds like the cam got out of phase,
For the cam to get out of phase I would suspect the timing chain to that cam to have failed or stretched and jumped a tooth or two. I think more work than just replacing rocker arms may be necessary. There is the possibility of damaged piston tops, valves and the need for a new timing chain set as well as the rockers. If that proves to be the case, the motor will have to be removed and dissembled to determine all the damage.
the timing chain is intact. it has very little play. I don't think enough to jump a tooth

Can this head be removed without pulling the engine.. please help... I can do the work.... need direction on disassembly

theres a fellow on the Enclave forum who did his own timing chains and his own 3 5 r wave plate.
he posted some pics....

and a video of dropping the engine.
Its gay this forum tell nothing … my chains slip a bit and broke few rockers now that O got new rockers I noticed that only the rockers on the camshafts side that they broke are loose … there is no way to ajust them when I took a close look … so was wondering if I need to change all lifters and camshaft in order to get the loose away …. What ever I’ll find out alone since this forum only loose r time…
