Hi all,

I'm literally going to snap! I took out a brand new 2023 Traverse and I love the drive, the space, and everything about it. However, after owning the car for around one week, I noticed a front-end rattling noise. I immediately contacted my dealership, but they are quite far from me, so I decided to do some research first.

After doing a lot of research, I found that this is a known issue for the Traverse. I took it to a nearby CERTIFIED Chevy service location and they told me it was normal. However, after I convinced them that it was not normal, they told me the loud rattling noise comes from the Purge valve and they would replace it. But, if it didn't fix the issue, I was out of luck.

The noise is still there, and it's driving me nuts! The car is never quiet! I did see some older YouTube videos of people replacing the Purge valve, and the rattle stopped, but none of them were from the newer model. So, it might be that the rattling sound is normal for old purge valves.

Now, I know three people who have the new Traverse, and all of them have the same issue. I mean, where are we? It's 2023, and we have brand new Chevys and every second Traverse owner has this issue, and there's no resolution!

Whoever can help me with any information that will lead to a fix, I'll quick-pay you $100!
That's where we are in 2023 with American car manufacturers..."

My 2013 equinox does it.
Though not always.
Finally one day i heard it, got out, popped hood and went ro look.
Finally was able to physically touch around...
Yup the ticking was coming from the purge valve.
My 2010 does not. Occasionally ill hear it. But quieter.. much quieter.
The early ones, thats how you knew they were bad.
Later years, replacing does nothing.

I had the ticking sound at warm idle on my 2022 Traverse. It was the purge pipe that runs accross the back of the engine that was resonating . There is a service information bulletin #PIP5796B that addresses this. Basically it adds foam sleeves to dampen the vibration of this purge line. Total fix.

Print the PDF in post #5 and bring it with you to the service dept. Your in warranty, let them fix it and call the Customers Assistance number in your manual to let them know that you know more about your vehicle than your dealer.

But dampener needs to be a genuine part or any is good? I'd rather go to my local mechanic that he should do it since my dealship's service sucks

Is it easy to install? Maybe I can buy it from gm and do it myself
I do not know, depends on your skill level. It may be a service tech part only.
Just go in and set up an appointment and let them do it so it's documented. More than likely a previously set up appointment can be done while you wait. Just take it in....

Based on the pic online doing a search on the sleeve part #...
It is just a foam sleeve.
Im thinking buy foam sleeve yourself and zip tie it in place.

Xltbest, can you post pic of the finished work?

You know, sometimes you as the owner can be gentle and kind to your vehicle vs the lowest guy on the totem pole doing this install.

Like when they did the wiper recall on my equinox. Wipers were way off... actually wiped off the glass on the drivers side.
I had to pull and reseat the arms in the proper location.... vs taking it back and waiting.

Exactly. I feel that sometimes the mechanic does a non clean and messy job. If I can do it I prefer that.

I concur - if you're in warranty, take the TSB to the dealer and say you want it installed.

Otherwise - I bet you could use a piece of foam pipe insulation from Lowes/Home Depot and do it yourself. Maybe run the foam the length of the pipe. rather than 2 donuts. You can get the pipe insulation in different pipe diameter sizes (i.e., 1/2", 3/4", etc). Check the size of the "pipe' and buy accordingly. And I'll bet you can get piece of insulation for less than GM will sell you a couple of "dampeners."

I'm guessing that it MAY be more of a "sound deadener" than a "damper," but who knows?

OR - if you're leery of the dealer, try the pipe insulation yourself first. If it doesn't do the job, take it to the dealer.

That looks easy to do.
When my 2023 arrives, ill see if theyve implemented this.
If not, ill do it myself.
Looks like foamy heat resistant rubber.
Based on the tsb, its placed at 2 spots. Those are probably the natural frequency points that help the tick be louder.
I wonder if simply wrapping electrical tape at those positions would change the natural frequency enough to quiet it.

Hmmmm.
