General Motors Corp. will start selling the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse crossover this fall, Mark LaNeve, GM North America's head of sales, service and marketing confirmed this week at the North American International Auto Show.

The cousin of the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, the Traverse will be built at the Spring Hill, Tenn., plant that formerly built the Saturn Ion and Vue.

LaNeve said GM expects to sell 80,000 to 100,000 of the Chevrolet crossovers annually in North America. Chevrolet reports that it doesn't have plans to export the crossover.

GM's Spring Hill Assembly plant is being retooled to build the Traverse, with assembly expected to begin this summer. The vehicle will be available for sale in the third quarter of the year, LaNeve said.

Of the new GM vehicles, LaNeve said, "the biggest volume player is the Traverse."

Chevrolet's expected volumes are higher than any of its cousins, of which nearly 137,000 were sold in 2007 after a full year of sales for the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook and a little more than half a year for the Buick Enclave.
