So my coolant fans will not turn on without the ac on. If I’m in stop and go or idling the engine temperature will slowly creep up. If I don’t turn ac or heat on the engine will overheat. As soon as I turn ac on the fans get in and temp goes back down. Should I change coolant temperature switch? Thanks for any help

Since the coolant temperature sensor is an inexpensive part, and one that you can change yourself, that would be an appropriate step 1. Assuming you don't have access to an advanced scan tool. The fans of course automatically kick in when the ac is on, so you have verified that the fans work and the relays must be good.
