As it says, the backup camera seems very bad a night. No problem during the day, but at night all grainy and can't even really see with it.
Do others have the same problem?

It is very noticeable since I switch between the 2019 Traverse and a 2016 Impala. The Impala backup is clear and shows fine, while the Traverse is grainy and almost useless. It is a bit of a pain since I backup park, and the Traverse is a real challenge.

Thought are - maybe bad camera?
The reverse lights work, so maybe I need to add additional backup lights?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I notice this when the only light available is the backup lamps. My guess is the backup lamps are not powerful enough, an infrequent and minor inconvenience for me. In a pinch I'll ride the brake or throw on the 4 way flashers for additional lighting from the brake LEDs.



If considering brighter LED substitutes for the white reverse lamps you are taking a chance of killing the battery. The reverse lamps are part of the perimeter lighting system and if the resistance of the circuit does not match the resistance of the tungsten/halogen stock lamps, the circuit remains active even after the lamps are timed out and the continuous drain will kill the battery..........TSB related to this for '17 Acadias.

I was reading an article on back up camera a few nights ago. There are a lots of differences in quality on the camera's vehicules. While the expensive cars are using better quality units most are using low quality camera not even one mega pixel. I hate mine . Mostly useless in different light condition. Rely more on my mirrors.

You are right, the only time they are bad is when the backup light is the only available light. I'll try try the brake or flasher idea.

As to LED in the backup lights, NOPE, not happening. I read about the Acadia problem and have tested LEDs on newer Chevy vehicles. Even with ballast resistors they can cause problems with the computers. At least in my vehicles, others folks may get different results.

My thought was to add secondary backup lights, like we did "back in the day", but with newer components. The plan being:
1) Mount thin LED spot/floods in back. Probably in the space between the rectangular exhaust outlet and rear bumper cover. No cutting of cover.
2) Tap into existing backup bulb and hook up to transistor controlled relay. New ones draw very little current from signal source, especially when considering that the source is a light bulb.
3) Run a fused 12V power line from front battery/power block to rear relay.
4) Goal is to have them fire up in reverse without making the computer go nuts.

The biggest hump seems to be getting to the actual rear backup bulb line. The backup is on the opening hatch. Looks like skin the back panel to get to the bulb, then run a signal line from there, through the rubber control line boot, then down and back to the relay.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram so I could tap in to the backup bulb hot/signal line while still in the body (not door)?

I'm gonna go gently on this since I am still under warranty. Probably add a hidden "kill switch" to disable if I have to go to dealer for work.

Any suggestions?

Odd part is that the 2016 Chevy Impala seems to have better night vision backup than the 2019 Chevy Traverse.
That is what surprised me.
I guess they may have wanted to make more money on the Traverse and used a cheaper part.

Your Impala's backup lights might be doing a better job.

Evidently, weak backup lights may not the cause of the problem and stronger lamps may not be the solution. Poor resolution of the camera and/or screen is likely the culprit.


My '19 Silverado came standard with a rear camera, but the Convenience II option package up grade both the camera and radio to HD versions. Radio definitely is much stronger on weaker FM stations that also broadcast in HD. Big difference noticed in images on the 8" screen likely due to both the camera and the screen.



No problem last night with night vision on the Silvy screen using same reverse in a similar size reflector, much better than the dim, grainy Traverse image.


I always get a factory Nav, I preferred the image over the Google cell map......until now........the Google map images projected to the HD radio are much sharper with higher contrast and faster refresh rates....made choice between an LTZ with factory Nav over a similarly equipped de-chromed RST without a Nav an easy one. Guess it's too much to expect that GM would include the better HD camera safety system in a similarly priced vehicle in place of one less critical like the Traverse' stupid motorized steering wheel adjuster.

I'd look for the backup lamps' fuse and utilize a fuse tap to the "turn on" connection of your relay. Fuse taps are fool proof and easy to undo. Plus they usually provide a fuse for the tapped wire so you will have a fuse on your power wire going to the relay and your tapped wire.

If you have the trailering package you could use the connector under the bumper to add an auxiliary back up lighting.

Always works for me....best way to tap into wiring and easily reversible without invalidating electrical warranty.

How could I have missed that - thanks for the reminder.
Yes is does have the trailer kit and the connector under the rear bumper flap. Makes it less of a problem.
Seems like the next step is to get a connector and then test mount a backup light to the trailer hitch.
Try it at night a few times and see if more light will solve the problem.
If the root of the problem is a poor camera, then more light won't solve it.

Side question - If I mount backup lights I would need to remove the bottom bumper cover.
I noted several screws on the bottom holding it in, but did not see attachment items on the edges, where it fits into the body by the rear tires.
Is there a an assembly or part diagram on that that would show removal?


If you have the trailering package you could use the connector under the bumper to add an auxiliary back up lighting.

i thought the same thing with my 2011. I tapped into the trailer wiring and added a little 5 led light and it helps a bit. I bought it off of wish for like $3 lol. I haven’t posted much on here so I can’t post pictures but if you’d like them I can send you them.

I had a 2019 Equinox loaner from the dealer and I thought the backup camera was much clearer. Could be a lighting issue. I hadn't realized the Equinox was much narrower (and the taillights are closer together) than the Traverse until I drove it.

There are hitch steps available with lights built into them. The bonus of a hitch step is bumper protection as well. I had the Bully brand one on my 14 and 16 Traverse. No lights on tho. It blended into the vehicles very well. Sorry no pics.
