Active Grille Shutter Operation?

5046 Views 51 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  greentraverse
Does anyone have good information on when they close/open? Does the top shutter close at highway speed and the bottom stay open?

I mounted an air to oil trans cooler on my '22 behind the upper grill shutter. I can maintain around 207F trans temp while towing on the highway, but while cruising slower the temp is quite a bit lower. I'm wondering if i move the cooler to behind the bottom grille/shutter area if it will get more consistent air flow.

Only real info i've see was on a Cruze and Equinox which only have shutters on one grill, not both.

Ok, found info online about Adaptive cruise control needing additional radar sensors in the front bumper area.
Then found a post on this forum, from member "just retired", jan 30, 2019, where he states that ACC has its 'radar device mounted in front of the condenser and radiator, low on the drivers side'.

Mystery solved I guess.

So the LT Premium package is actually a lower shutter delete instead of adding the upper.

I have not been impressed so far with our gas mileage, but we're only at 700 miles. I wonder what difference the 20" wheels and lack of lower shutters make. I do love the ACC though. First vehicle with it and it works well so far. Poor engineering to not be able to have both.
Yes on shutter delete.

What mpg are you seeing?
If its like gen1, the 20 inch wheels should have the same outer diameter as the 18s. So no change in RPMs.
Do they weigh more or less?
By the way, on my 2023 I did my 1st oil change at 736 miles.

About 16 city, 24 on the interstate.

Interstate isn't bad I guess for 75 mph, but around town it's worse than my F-150 4x4 which is a bummer. I assumed the 20" wheels have more rotating mass than the 18" and would affect that. Only 1 MPG off from claimed but I typically do better than city ratings with other vehicles. So, not horrible and it's early yet, but not great.
Keep in mind it's GOOD for the trans fluid to hit 212+ every so often. It will boil off any moisture.

This is especially true if your running that crappy Dex VI, which is very hygroscopic.
I just returned from a 1200 mile trip from Iowa to Branson, MO. Ran most of the trip between 70 and 75 and the trip included about 150 miles of stop and go traffic. Overall milage was right at 27 mpg. This is a 2019 FWD with about 22000 miles, The best my 2915 LTZ AWL got was 21 mpg
Hmmmmmmmmmmm........... I guess I have no shutters. I WANT shutters!!! I'll check when Wifey gets home.

It seems odd that they would be dropped, then returned shortly afterward.
Covid related production?

That was going to be my guess, too. The average buyer probably doesn't even realize there were shutters previously and that he doesn't have them, since GM didn't even put them in the brochures before. And they made a few hundred bucks more on each car, too. (Because we KNOW they didn't drop the MSRP or give you a rebate.)
