Active Grille Shutter Operation?

Does anyone have good information on when they close/open? Does the top shutter close at highway speed and the bottom stay open?

I mounted an air to oil trans cooler on my '22 behind the upper grill shutter. I can maintain around 207F trans temp while towing on the highway, but while cruising slower the temp is quite a bit lower. I'm wondering if i move the cooler to behind the bottom grille/shutter area if it will get more consistent air flow.

Only real info i've see was on a Cruze and Equinox which only have shutters on one grill, not both.

I wish I could give info on when the shutters open and close, but I don't know. My 2019 has shutters on the larger upper opening only. I mounted my air to oil transmission and separate engine oil coolers in the lower opening. I also moved my front license plate to the side so as not to block the airflow to the coolers.

Thanks. I'm planning to move the cooler to the lower grill. One of them has to be open...

Odd tidbit from ~350 miles of towing a 5k TT yesterday. First day towing i saw good 207ish trans temps. Long pulls the trans would warm a bit then cool back down to the 207 mark.
Yesterday the temps kept creeping up and up, even at steady cruising. Same speeds, same outside temp, same load as the day before and trans temps finally rested around 219-221F.
Then i saw the AC button was turned off... Turned it back on and within a few minutes the trans temps were back down to 207 as before and remained there the rest of the day.

Further adds to the question of does the AC on while on the highway actually open the louvers more or does it turn on the fan to help air come across the condenser with just the bottom grill open?

Shutters are speed regulated for fuel economy. Would need a high-level scan tool to see when and how much shutters are commanded closed at speed for real accuracy on what's going on.
Shutters more open for a/c condenser air flow for its efficiency is normal.
I'm not sure how many opening settings the shutters have, if they have steps or are variable, but I suspect system is programmed to road speed, engine temps, a/c usage and and to open shutters more if trans. temps. or engine temps. climb above a certain point along with what outside temps are being sensed.
Fans shut off above certain forward speeds, old memory says above 35 mph in electric fan equipped vehicles.
Those shutters have a lot more logic in their system than one would think due to all the variables / climates encountered.
My '20 has no trans. temp gauge. It has the useless off-road tilt/angle setting instead.

A bit of new development for anyone following.

While on my trip back home earlier this week while towing the camper, i stopped and pulled the fuse for the active air shutters, so they would both remain open.
Dramatic difference in temperatures. Coolant temp remained around 180-185. Trans temp got down to around 170 and ended up around 185 after some climbs while on the highway, so a good 20-30F cooler trans temps once air is coming across the external cooler.
No CEL light while driving that time, but it did come on after the next restart. When i got home, i re-installed the fuse, CEL went back out after a few trips and all back to normal.
I still plan to move the cooler down to behind the bottom radiator but at least i now know if that doesn't work, i'll just pull that fuse while towing.

Do you have the factory V92 tow package and if so, have you done these tests with it in tow mode.
Curious as I've seen no mention of V92 or tow mode.
I wonder if shutters stay open on V92 equipped when in tow mode.

No V92 package on mine. I've added an external air to oil trans cooler and the hitch/wiring/brake controller (of course).

That's what i'm thinking, the tow mode has to do something like that. I notice when the engine temp gets to 200F the shutters seem to open as the coolant temp drops very quickly. Trans temp does not seem to cause the shutters to open, but the max i've seen is 221F though.

I wish it was as easy to just swap out the drive mode switch to add the tow mode as in the older models. :/

Maybe a hidden under dash switch to interrupt power to the shutter motor so when you're towing it doesn't close so no having to pull fuses but have behind the wheel control when you need it.

The fuse appears to be F64 - Aeroshutter, per the 2019 Owner's Manual (pg 319).
I'm having an issue with my '18. I have a CEL on currently. Diagnostics says something like "lost communication with shutter assembly 2 (lower)". Took it to my trusted mechanic (not dealership) and they put a new lower shutter assembly on it, but didn't fix the problem. Still has the CEL. Mechanic said possible issue with a relay switch or battery monitor module. The shutter is currently stuck open, but mechanic said he hooked it up to computer and it functions fine. Anyone know of other people reporting an issue like this? Obviously, with the shutters stuck open, i can drive it, but i would like to see about getting it fixed (whatever the problem is). I dont want to drive around with the CEL on constantly. just trying to get an idea of what i may be getting into or having to pay for if/when i have to take it to the dealership/service. Thanks for any input!

I'm having the same exact issue with my 2017 Sierra. I changed the shutter over the weekend and the light is still on. Have you fixed yours yet?

I have the V92 pkg on a 2018 Traverse Premier, which adds both a supplemental oil and trans cooler, plus a trans temp sensor for real-time monitoring, increased shocks, and upgrades the tow capacity weight to 5,000lbs.
If you try to tow WITHOUT the V92, and add an aftermarket tow bar, keep in mind the weight limit is limited to 1,500 lbs only and you shouldn't try to pull as much as a V92 equipped Traverse unless the extra upgrades are added to handle the necessary cooling requirements or you will.shirt life thebtranss and engine big time because the heat loads are intense when towing 5K lbs w/ a V6 SUV.
Even with the V92, when towing, the tow mode does NOT disable the shutters from closing, though it obviously should while in that mode, as It then blocks the airflow to the factory provided oil and transmission coolers located behind the shutters.
Normal daily drive temps in transmission run ~175-180°. When towing a 3,400 lb TT in Florida w/ ambient Temps of 95°, for a 100 mile trip, if I push it to 65-70 mph on the Interstate, temps would climb to 200°-215° which is too high for any length of time without risking reduced life of trans. If I drop to 55-60 mph temp held below 200°.
Pulling the fuse is a good idea to allow them to be locked open w/o going to extremes of disconnecting, removing or other options, as long as nothing else runs off that circuit and its a dedicated fuse. I'm going to try the fuse pull method and try to pull the TT again and see how much, if any improvement in trans temp I can see andnwill.report back the results to see if they match the 20-30° drop indicated while towing

V92 doesn't change shocks. Same on all models, only difference is 20" wheels vs 18" wheels.
Are the shutters between the AC condenser and radiator? Lookin in the grill of my ‘21 RS, all I see is the AC condenser.
Theyre up front, in front of both the cond. And rad.
Ive read that some gm vehicles have top or bottom or both.
Ill have to check mine, i can see they are at least top.
Took a look at mine this morning. Definitely in front of.
Top ones open.
Bottom ones closed.
There are two sets of shutters. This is a 2019 with the front fascia/grille removed.
