2019 Traverse shift into park error

First off the vehicle belongs to my friend. He doesn't know I am doing this. At first he really like the Traverse. Great gas mileage and lots of room. May of this year 2020, vehicle started to give a shift into park message when trying to turn off. Was in park and yellow light on push button didn't go out. Tried several times to remedy problem. After a few tries vehicle shut off with no problem. Taken to dealer and under warranty, inline shifter wire jumper was replaced. That was when the mileage was around 27,000. Now 7 months later and 11,000 more miles, it is happening again. Not under warranty now. Is this an ongoing issue?

Yes. Do a search, you'll find lots of threads on bad Gen 2 shifters.
Thank you....was just looking and found lots of threads. Not sure now if I want a new chevy automatic trans. I own a 2017 Chevy Cruze with manual trans. Might have to consider other brands of vehicles.
The repair and/or part "should" (I believe) be under warranty for 1year/12k miles though and it falls under that

Check the repair paperwork
Been out of warranty mileage wise for awhile. Told 400 dollars to fix. Service tech said they don't have to many vehicles with this problem. Apparently not up to date with this forum cause I was searching hours last night. Lots of vehicles have had this problem and continue too. Shame they can't take time to fix problem correctly.

Again, you said it was 7 months & 11k miles ago that they fixed it under warranty.
The part and/or repair should be covered under a 1 year/12k mile "warranty" from the time they fixed it & you should fall under that time/miles still.

Check the invoice/work order, their work "should" be warranted for some period of time.
Thanks for info...will have him check.
That in-line shifter wire extension repair was BS from my perspective. It may have prevented it from happening before the problem showed, but after the problem already occurred; you need the updated shifter assembly. I ran into the same issue, they did the wire update and less than 2 weeks later it was occurring again. Difference in my case is both happened under the factory warranty period.

If they are saying it’s a different part now, push them on why the issue wasn’t fully fixed the first time and they just delayed the real repair until it was out of warranty.

Thank you for the info. Will relay the message. At least he has more info of the problem then he did before.

I never experienced the issue, but from what I've read....you're right. The wire repair was just a "band aid" & not the real fix

It is still under warranty . Call GM 1-800 because I had a problem with my windshield and it was fixed under warrenty. They it was defective and the padding in dash came out bad windshield was loose again. I called and stated two choices. 1 fix it again under warrenty or lemon law filed.

They fixed it, I was charged and reimbursed with a check after filing paper work, phone calls stating it was under warrenty when it was first reported. Your techs did defective work. That were more than happy to settle with me.

Now I am going through a problem with the parking shift. It's in park but still saying it is in gear. I video it because it doesn't happen all the time. Turned out a band holder broke and transmission shifter is failing. I fortunately have a bumper to bumper out of dealer warrenty. But I only have less then 10k miles on a 2018. Which means this should be a recall because I'm shy reg warrenty from Feb 2021 to now. 5 months over.

It can be fix. Call GM and also go and file on national highway safety transportation so more cases show up.

But if they fixed during the warrenty then it was repaired in correctly and should be covered under original warrenty. Go to a dealer and get all work ordered and send to GM. Try were very helpful after I provided the proof and knowledge I needed.

Good luck!!!

This just occurred on my 2019 Traverse with 30844 miles but warranty expired in December 2021. Waiting to find out cost. They recalled 2017 Malibus for this issue. Why not other vehicles? Several class action law suits have been filed but they appear to be state specific.

See the video I posted in Post #7 here:

watched a couple of you tube videos, about an hour getting to and putting back the plastic surrounding the shifter and a paper clip..
so simple, even a cave man can do it....

no more "shift to park" issues..
also did a few other things to prevent other future problems..

no way was I going to the dealership for this one..

Maybe someone could clarify this for me. After I watched a couple videos it seems that its really just the lever switch that's failing, and specifically the contacts are getting crudded up. If that's it, as a more direct, lasting fix wouldn't it make sense to put in a high quality, sealed switch and be done with it?

RE: Park Error message; Service Bulletin No.: 19-NA-206 Date: September, 2019

My vehicle a 2019 Traverse was 500 miles and one month over warranty. The dealer charged me close to $400 to fix this issue. According to the service bulletin they over charged in labor about 1.5 hours. I contacted the service manager and he refunded $125 to me. I would highly recommend to anyone who is still under warranty to go in and have this fixed as a warranty item. I called GM and they told me that there was not a recall because it is not a safety issue.
I down loaded the Service Bulletin and I ordered the part. I installed the little wiring harness. Problem is back after a month.
I guess now, I will install a new shifter. My question is which part number is the latest FIX?
# 84693609 or # 13534326
Thanks in advance,
BBLred
Do a search here. Someone has a thread on how to resolve this by bypassing the whole thing.
My 2019 started doing this the other day. I always start out in low and shift to 9 while getting under way to avoid the nagging shutting of at traffic lights. Sometimes, I've been able to put it in low and going up and own through gears with the + and - buttons while sitting still and it'll park. Today, it was failing every time I parked the vehicle. I tried driving it in "D" and I've parked 4 or 5 times now with no issue. I stopped at the dealer with a copy of the latest Tech Bulletin and the guy said he hadn't heard of this problem. This is a pretty big GM dealer selling and servicing all brands of GM vehicles. Could this be computer related and not a harness or switch. I gonna put my code reader on it and see if anything shows up.
No codes, present or saved. It doesn't seem to happen from reverse or "D". Only when I've been driving in "L" and running in "9". I've been doing this to bypass the engine stop feature at traffic lights. FYI
