Foward collision alert

Playing with the features on my 2018 high country. I had a 2009 Traverse so I love the vehicle and 3rd row seating and went for the high country due to the bells/whistles/options and I want to make full use of them.

Adaptive cruise control worked well, was pleased with the braking and distance at 35mph. Once I get some miles on it, will check it out at higher rates of speed.

I need help with a few things (yes i have read the manual)

1) Foward collision alert - I have enabled this via settings on the infotainment display. It is set to alert and brake. I dont seem to be getting any kind of alert or braking, I can come right up on someone and no braking, no noticable visual alert. In my Hyundai Genesis, I get a flashing display on my driver dash indicator and an audible beep. I am expecting something similar. Can anyone let me know what I should expect for the Traverse and under what condition?

2) Front pedestrian detection - Also enabled but not seeming to get anything. Maybe given #1 above I have a malfunctioning sensor?

3) Parking - I do not have any type of warning for front proximity alert. I can switch to camera/birds eye view on the infotainment display for assistance but a) is there some way to get an audible alarm similar to what happens on backup? b) can i get the camera/birds eye view to automatically engage at low rates of speed (ie 5mph) without having to press a button?

4) lane departure warning and keep assist- Again, I have this enabled via the settings and I have the button engaged in the center console. I can see the 'flash' indicator on my driver display (green if in lane, amber if encroaching) but I can easily switch lanes on a two lane road with no 'correction'. Is the lane keep assist more for curbs etc or is it truly for standard city/highway lanes.

1. No alert. Probably because you are driving responsibly. Seems to function not so much on how close you approach or how fast you approach, but a combination of both......if you want to be nuts enough to give it a test accelerate towards a car and swerve left at the last second in a situation like getting in a left turn lane at the last second. The 8 red LED heads up display will flash and beep like crazy. But as far as automatic braking in time to stop - don't count on it! That's why the claim is for assisted braking and not complete autonomous braking. Even works at extremely low speeds if it senses you are not braking....have 3 cars and have to swerve past one at the upper end of the driveway to parallel park and it triggers at less than 5 mph.....scares the crap out of you if not expecting it.

2. Front detection will pick up pedestrians on the side of the road, even in unlighted conditions, seems to be triggered by movement.....sometimes even thinks a deer is a pedestrian which is OK. Haven't attempted to test the automatic pedestrian braking because all my friends and relatives are too "chicken" to walk in front of a moving vehicle. But just like forward braking I wouldn't count on it stopping in time. Those TV commercials depicting these feature are puffery or more likely full of $hit......no substitute for watching where you are going.

3. There's no forward parking sensors.....only the cameras. Front view won't automatically engage unless you his the forward camera button on the parking screen, but in addition you should have an overhead 360 view on the right side which will show distance from all objects surrounding the vehicle including distance both front and rear vehicles when parking.

4. Here again probably because you are driving responsibly. A flash of the turn directional or engaging the turn directional switch during a lane change will override the LKA function which nudges the steering wheel back toward the center of the lane. Activate the function in the menu and try it without signalling. Otherwise works great......find a road where the cameras activate the function, hands loosely on the steering wheel without actively steering and let the vehicle drift toward either side of the lane, the LKA will actively nudge the vehicle away from the line toward the center of the lane....don't actively steer and it will do the same at the opposite side of the lane. The faster you are traveling the more assertive the nudge. .....if the vehicle can't compensate enough and it crosses the line an audible beep is heard and the DIC flashes and shows a graphic of a steering wheel adn wording to take the wheel. I tried this on a deserted stretch of Rte.15 going 65 mph for about a mile including curved sections of the roadway and it compensated keeping the vehicle in the lane without crossing either line........obviously no LEO was around because it would have looked from the rear that the driver was a DWI or in my case a senior so DWO. System is much improved over my '16 Malibu's systems, Traverse probably contains some DNA from the Caddy's auto drive system.

Thank you for the reply

I figured out a few more things

-collision detection will flash a red indicator closer to the windshield on the drivers side and issue an audible alert if you accelerate towards a stopped vehicle (I turned a corner and traffic was abruptly stopped, i was accelerating and the red flash engaged, I dont think it auto braked because I definitely was!)

-lane keep assist does not engage until after 35 mph (found on a demo on youtube)

-I am still looking for a way to get more information at the front of the vehicle when parking. If anyone can figure out a hack to have the camera/birds eye view automatically engage at speeds less then 5mph (even if it keeps turning on in traffic, I would be fine with that) let me know. For the interim, when I park in our parking garage i either back in or if parking forwards, i engage the camera manually through the infotainment display.

Manually seems the only way to go. Even if someone came up with a kludge it would be worthless because it would override the Nav display and likely voice prompts.....probably screw up something else because '18s Nav differs because it auto zooms as you get closer to the destination. GM's upgaded OEM Nav's worth every nickel compared to aftermarkets or the Google/AutoAndroid/Iphone alternative in vehicles lacking an OEM Nav.

Besides if I'm not mistaken (can't confirm now because its freezing outside and the windshield's iced over) the the camera does automatically switch from rear camera to front camera in back and forth movements into a parking space and switches to previous screen as soon as forward movement exceeds 5 mph. I think the trick is you have to be in reverse first and then it will automatically switch to the front with forward movement up to 5 mph - which would not be the situation moving in traffic. Have to manually hit the front camera button in an open nose in parking space, but auto switching welcome in back and forth movements in a tight space.

I just verified what I said above, should work on all bodylines having a front, in-grille camera. After backing up using the reverse camera, the vehicle will automatically switch to the forward view camera as soon as the the gearshift is put in Neutral or Forward, and will automatically toggle from reverse view to forward view with the corresponding position of the gearshift. The 360 overview is always onscreen alongside in both positions. For nose-in forward parking, shift to reverse for a sec. then back to forward and you'll get the forward camera. Can't get any closer when parking than when you can actually see the front bumper.....you can kiss the garage wall without going through it!

We have a 2018 Premier AWD so our feature set is similar to your High Country, just don't have the sensing cruise and full automatic braking (only low-speed). Coincidentally, I actually had our forward collision alert activate for the first time today, and it was in error. A vehicle stopped at a red light was pulling a trailer with a new Equinox on it, so the system apparently thought the Equinox was closer than it really was, and set off the light and beeper before we got close to it. It didn't autobrake in error though (thankfully). Was actually nice to see how the system works - the beeps definitely get your attention; we came from a Tahoe that vibrated the seat cushion instead.

The lane keep system is quite subtle, but it does the job. If you're going above 35 (as noted above) and hit the white line, it gently nudges you the opposite way and the green lane change alert symbol in the cluster will briefly change to amber. It will then reach the other white line and nudge you back the other way, eventually it will get tired of you not steering and beep at you, also showing a DIC message about "take control of steering" or something similar.

As far as the front cam, the easiest way to get it to "auto-generate" is to first drag the camera option onto the little shortcut menu at the top (with nav, climate and audio). Then drive above 5 mph, select nav or whatever you want to show while driving, then drop down to 5 mph or less (or just stop), and put the front camera on the screen. From there on, when stopped (or moving slow), it will default to the camera, then change to whatever else you selected once you get above 5 mph. Note that you'll have to repeat this step anytime you're stopped and switch to another screen; it'll default to that one instead.

Really miss the HD radio station capability which is also included in the Silverado's base Nav head.
I'm with on that, I thought the Traverse came with HD radio capability (the owner's manual says if equipped, even though NONE of the trims come with HD radio now I know, so why include it in the manual?). I checked online and it's hard to get a definite answer if it had it. The dealers weren't sure at the time of purchase either. Some of the HU customization options are actually omitted in the demo mode of the vehicle, so they couldn't tell for sure.

Turns out only the Tahoe and Suburban, IIRC, have HD radio now.

I really miss it, especially here in NYC, there were loads of HD radio stations and I miss that audio quality of them on the radio now. And yes, I know there's streaming capability, was just looking towards that HD radio, even my 2015 Subaru Legacy even had it.

Seems like a conscious effort on GM's/Chevy's behalf to end HD radio perhaps.

FYI

From the pictures you'll note that the front of the '18 running board (mud guards offered in one shape only, although offered in many colors at $100/set from a previous post on the Chevy site) is different from the '17 and earlier.... there is no built in splash guard "bump".....the '18 mud guards black at $50/set will not fit on earlier Traverses with or without running boards and the earlier mud guards will not fit on the '18 with or without running boards because the inner fendr liner is mounted differently.

OEM NEW Front Molded Splash Guard Mud Flaps 2018 Chevrolet Traverse 84159804

That is who I ordered them from.......note that the post depicts all the installation hardware and that each flap has a separate installation mounting spacer to be inserted behind the edge of the flap......because the fender liners of the '18s are recessed and earlier ones are not and the spacer is necessary for mounting.

FYI, Chevy has them on their accessories website, for $50 for the same black ones. Plus, they have a sale of 15% off, so depending on tax, overnight S&H via FedEx to NYC is $52.50 for me, for one set after discount, taxes and S&H included.

Color matched sets are double at $100, black are $50.

Thanks, I hadn't equated the two actions. Played with and added the camera shortcut and moved the rear HVAC icon to the main screen the first day....so I though the camera default was auto switching cameras.

If you have the first gen (2009-2017), the heated seats should come on when auto-started IF the outside air temp is cold enough (i.e., they're not going to come on if it's 80F outside). My 2011 and my 2017 both did/do this. I don't know the exact temperature needed. Can't speak for the steering wheel heaters as I didn't/don't have them, but I would ASSUME it's the same.

Can't speak to the 2018, but again, I would ASSUME it's the same.

When all else fails: READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL:

Starting the Engine Using Remote Start

To start the vehicle:
1. Press and release Q on the RKE transmitter.
2. Immediately after completing Step 1, press and hold / until
the parking lamps flash. If the vehicle's lights cannot be seen,
press and hold / for at least four seconds.

When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will turn on and remain on as
long as the engine is running. The doors will be locked and the climate
control system will operate automatically if the vehicle has the
automatic system, or at the same setting as when the vehicle was last
turned off.

If the vehicle has an automatic climate control system and heated
seats, the heated seats turn on during colder outside temperatures
and shut off when the key is turned to ON/RUN. See Heated and
Cooled Front Seats - pg 58.

The rear window defogger and heated mirrors, if the vehicle has
them, turn on during colder outside temperatures and turn off when the
key is turned to ON/RUN.

After entering the vehicle during a remote start, insert and turn the key
to the ON/RUN position to drive the vehicle.

Remote start operates the same way as above on the '18...........heated seats, steering wheel, rear defogger, front defogger and heated mirrors turn on in cold temperatures........ventilated seats in hot temperatures.

Functions are operational but the indicator lights for these accessories are not lighted. After ON button engine start the rear defogger and heated mirrors remain active, but the seats and steering wheel deactivate and must be turned on again if desired..

Another quirk noted with the rear camera which has a button on the back of the rear view mirror for adjusting the brightness level of the LCD in five steps:

When stopped in traffic waiting to make a turn with a vehicle stopped behind you, might notice the brightness of the display pulsing brighter and dimmer - don't adjust the brightness to compensate and nothing to repair. Seems depending upon their location on the vehicle the flashing directional indicator lights behind you may be fooling the auto brightness sensor on the rear view camera, causing a temporary pulsing.

On my 2017, the heated seat indicators show ON (if it's cold enough outside), UNTIL i insert the key and turn the ignition switch to ON. Then the heaters turn off and the lights go out. Must turn them on again yourself if you want them on.

Same as on my '15 Traverse and '13 Avalanche.....seems they changed this with the lastest gen model changes like the '16 Silverado and new Malibus....heated seats are functional on cold weather auto start, but no indicator lights - addressed in their owners manuals.

Did you have to drill through metal to mount the splash guards?
On my 2018 I remember only having to drill through very hard plastic and whatever that wheel well material is, composite fiber something, some tough stuff.

When i did the splash guards on the back, I didn't want to take the tire off to drill(front I just turned the wheels to get clearance), so I grinded the screws down shorter so I didn't need to drill.
Drilling I found was just to give clearance for the extra length of the screw which is probably a little extra long to make it a lot easier to align and start threading. All the holding power is on the metal clip, not the full depth of the screw hole.
Note: If your screwing into splash guards and they start moving outward away from vehicle as you screw them in, 1 of 2 things are the problem. 1. The screw isn't going into the hole you drilled(hole not lined up well with screw), 2. or if you grinded screws down, they aren't ground down far enough and are bottoming out on plastic behind clip
Installed in December and held well through the winter.

hi i have the 18 traverse premier also the pearl white one redline package. i want to install the splash guards but i kind of want the ones that match the glossy black perimeter of the car but is that mosaic black ? i bought the molded black ones havent installed them yet cause i think the mosaic black would look better? will it match? did you purchase the molded black ? did you see what the mosaic black ones look like do they match or look nicer?

Mozaic black gloss is a better match than the flat black.
