What codes are you getting? The codes that tie to the performance of the catalytic converter can be interpreted as O2 sensors. The O2 sensors measure the difference in the exhaust between two points in the exhaust system. If the values between the two sensors are the same the check engine light is fired. If the catalytic converter is not doing its job the O2 sensors are reporting no change in the exhaust correctly. To address the catalytic converter needs replaced. A clogged converter may cause a stall when idling. A failed converter is somewhat common but a clogged is not but possible.
