First came the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook, and now we have the Chevrolet Traverse, the fourth and apparently last big crossover SUV on General Motors' Lambda platform. While designers have managed to differentiate the Enclave from the Acadia and Outlook with styling and more luxury features, the new Chevy also has its own styling, with a Malibu-like grille and Chevy-style twin round taillamps. Still, the rear shoulder-line resembles the coke-bottle flare of the Enclave, and the fully loaded example on the show floor doesn't look too downmarket from the Buick.

And the Chevy Traverse will come with just one engine: the direct gas injection 3.6-liter V-6, rated 286 horsepower with dual exhausts, 281 horsepower without. A six-speed automatic will be the only transmission, and Chevy expects the front-drive version (all-wheel-drive will be available) to get 25- or 26-mpg highway EPA mileage.

Built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, originally the Saturn plant and on sale "later this year," Chevy isn't talking price and its general manager, Ed Peper, says only that it'll be in the ballpark of the Outlook's under-$28,000 price.

Other features will include 4500-pound towing capacity, Stabilitrak, OnStar, chrome-ring grille inserts (in other words, it doesn't have the blacked-out trim of other popular nameplate SUVs), turn-signal repeaters in the sideview mirrors, and as options, heated/cooled seats, rearview camera and of course, DVD player.
