Auto Stop/Start

I'm looking for some feedback from any 2018 or 2019 Traverse owners regarding the auto stop/start feature that Chevy introduced on these models. I was all set to buy a new 2018 Traverse last year when the new model was released until I started reading about this feature that was added beginning with the 2018 model. You don't have the option to turn off the auto stop/start like some other vehicles that I've read about so this caused me some concerns about the newer model Traverses. For anyone that has a new model with this feature, have you had any problems or issues with the auto stop/start, such as hesitation, shutter or delay when taking off after the engine starts back up? Or an issue such as the engine falling dead and not starting back up when you come to a stop?

I keep getting this image in my mind of coming to a stop to make a left turn where there is oncoming traffic, and the darn vehicle hesitates or shutters when I try to accelerate or it falls dead all together!

I've read that you can buy some after-market devices to disable the auto stop/start, but of course I'm sure you'd have to be concerned about invalidating the vehicle warranty unless it's that easy to remove this device anytime you take it in for servicing?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Initially had the same concerns and hated it on my '16 Malibu. Newer one battery DC-DC system on the Traverse works seamlessly. Most of the time I don't even notice it operating. The engine restarts before you can get your foot from the brake to the accelerator..........don't even hear the engine crank for a restart just a slight bump. No hesitation, shutter or delay....engine is up to speed before you hit the accelerator and transmission servos are pressurized during the stop cycle so no delay in tranny engagement.



Easy to disable from the shift lever, shift to L and hit the (+) button eight times for L9 and transmission will automatically upshift and downshift through all the gears for the entire drive cycle same as if a disable button was used.


Aftermarket device will invalidate the warranty, but also requires a different remote starting procedure whose timing and waiting I found unsuitable for my non witnessed starts.

I also had some reservations about the stop/start feature before purchasing my Traverse, but honestly, it is a non-issue. I have to really be paying attention to even notice it taking place. If it's super cold outside, it doesn't auto-stop anyway. By super cold, I mean single digits without the windchill. Which makes right now super duper cold I guess since it is -23 outside today (-46 wind chill).

Anyway... I don't think you will really find it to be a concern. Like Thomcat says above, you can disable it. But why? It's truly not something noticeable when you're operating the vehicle.

FYI Repost of GM info on operation and conditions for start/stop to engage ......


Traverse uses the DC-DC Invertor system which might answer questions relative to why no disable button, which appears to be installed only on Caddys with this system and on the Ultra Capacitor systems.

Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it. Makes me a lot more comfortable coming from a current Traverse owner.

You can also control it with the brake pedal.

When the engine stops, lift your foot slightly off the brake, then put it back.

It will stay running.

I've had my 2019 traverse since 30 Nov 2018 and about 2400 miles now. I was hesitant with the auto stop feature after experiencing it in a rented Malibu. But really it's not that bad. You will learn very quickly when to expect it to stop. And if I don't want it to, like at a stop sign, then I just feather the brake. I honestly think it is increasing gas mileage. Mine is averaging 22-23 right now, which is incredible for this type of vehicle and engine, and I don't sit in heavy traffic much.

Got my '19 traverse Dec. 29 and have about 4k miles so far. Took a couple of days to get used to, but don't even notice it anymore.
