‘20 rear lift gate opening automatically

Our brand new traverse now has gouged paint on its tailgate after the lift gate has automatically opened. First time it happened garage was up and my son saw it happen, no damage. Next time it opened into the closed garage when garage door was opened it scraped up the paint pretty good. Chevy said they had no other cases of similar incidents, but I’m sure not many have 2020s yet? Dealership ordered a new switch and globbed on touch up paint. Unless they figure out its an actual problem or defect the touch up paint is all they’re gonna cover. To be honest I was impressed with their thoroughness of going through it trying to find the problem. Would have been easy for them to write me off. The keys weren’t being handled and the traverse was unlocked in the garage when it happened. Please let me know if anyone has had a similar problem.

Thanks

Al

In the past.... if this happened owners would report that theyd come out to open tailgates (the ones with power lift gates).
I believe I remember someone also had a damaged (paint scratched) tailgate.
For the non self opening- I believe the tailgate popping open- would set off the vehicle alarm.

The cases were related to damaged tailgate switches.
Where water got into the switch and built up corrosion.

Just last week- I replaced the sensor pad in our Equinox. I Noticed the rubber pad had torn and I didnt want water to affect it. So I ordered a new one- and installed it. $12.

By chance did the f.o.b. button get depressed while in your pocket?

Little while back I was in the living room playing with my granddaughter with the keys in my pocket and went outside and noticed all the windows open on my '19 Traverse. Must have double hit the lock button.

Keys were not being handled at all. Engineer from Chevy happened to be at the shop when I brought it in, his best guess was a bad switch in the tailgate. Dealership ordered a new one but guessed it’ll be a while w the GM strike.

I had it open while I was at the DIY car wash. The FOB was in my pocket. Washing the back and all of a sudden the hatch opens...oh ****.. I must have walked by the foot sensor and it opened. Another time, the wife was getting the dogs out and she also had the FOB in her purse and did the same thing, must have walked by the sensor (bowtie light) and it closed on her.

I know it doesn't match your issue but be careful anyways.

Don't need an engineer to take a guess; exactly how is the tailgate switch the best guess? My guess is that it could just as likely be the switch in the driver's door or the under the bumper ultrasonic release.

Part swapping attitude approach may take several tries and more lost paint.
