Help needed - 2019 DIY Oil Change!

Hi, doing my first oil change at 2000 miles. Have done many oil changes on Toyotas and Lexus but first time on a Chevy so wanted to confirm I am doing it right.

Attached pictures of the drain plug and oil filter. Drain the oil and then unscrew and remove the old filter. Put the new filter and add oil. i was able to turn the filter with hand so dont think would need any tool to remove the old filter and put the new.

Would be great if someone can confirm that this is correct.

Thats the engine drain plug and the filter location.


If changing from the top reaching down you'll be doing it by feel. There is a projection on the adapter to guide BUT the filter must be tipped back and to the right to catch the thread......if you try vertical and level it won't catch. Stock filter is a shorty for factory assembly and the replacement PF63/63E is taller.

Thank you Thomcat. Changed the oil this morning. One of the easier oil changes. Did not even need to jack the vehicle.

FYI - I bought a 2019 end of last fall and first two oil changes are on Chevy. You may want to check it out. I usually change my own but free was nice - they rotate the tires too.

Heads up: I think I read somewhere that people using aftermarket filters we're experiencing subsequent engine problems... Can't remember why... And the recommendation for DIYers was to stick with GM filters. Again, I think I read this somewhere...

There was indeed a bulletin for the the 1st gen models.

If a vehicle came in for engine noise etc.
to check for aftermarket oil filters. If the issue was found to be caused by the aftermarket filter- warranty was to be denied.
If the vehicle had ACDELCO filter... proceed with diagnostics




They found that aftermarket filters were falling apart. The media was making its way into critical engine parts and clogging passages... causing oil starvation.

Well, I planned on doing my own oil changes when the free oil changes ran-out.

I ordered one of those Fumuto Oil drain valves to make it easier to drain the oil.

Yesterday I purchased:
1- 4.73 L/5 US Qt. jug of Mobil 1 synthetic Oil: $57.99 cdn
1- 1 L/1.05 US Qt. of Mobil 1 synthetic Oil: $14.49 cdn
1- M1-212 Mobil 1 Oil filter: $22.99 cdn
Subtotal: $95.47
Tax: $14.32

Grand total: $109.79

When I saw how expensive it was, I just went right to the customer service desk and returned everything.

For comparison my dealer offers a full synthetic Oil and filter change + a 15 point inspection starting at $74.95 http://www.steelechev.com/GMCertified ( yes a bit more for SUVs)

Why would I give myself all the trouble of changing my own oil when the dealer can do it for about the same or cheaper.

I can still do things like brake service and other maintenance work that the dealer charges too much for, but for oil changes, I may as well leave it to them.

OK so I either go to Walmart or Advance Auto Parts. Walmart Synthetic 5 qt. jug Mobil1 can be gotten for $23 and a oil filter is about $5. Advance has an Oil Change Deal where you get a 5 qt supply, either a jug or individual 1 qt, bottles and a good oil filter for $34-$37 and get perk rewards back. I try to get the K&N filter which retails for about $14 itself, and is reviewed #1 in the test above. I believe I have about 6 more oil change supplies stocked up for our 4 vehicles.
I just used two Advance rewards coupons to get $10 off some Rainex washer fluid additive. I am getting rid of my Fram filters since they were the lowest rated in any of the reviews I have seen on Youtube. Thank you for all the folks who take the time to open up these things to show us how they stack up.

Wow, either the value of the Canadian dollar is in the toilet or you lack competitive places to shop. I have changed my own oil for 50 years so I always know whats in the crankcase.========

Price is not a main issue anyway. Went for my free tire rotation before the warranty expired ......I said No free oil change, just did it myself. Service tech wrote with heavy red marker on the work order: "Cross rotate tires only, DO NOT CHANGE OIL/FILTER." Comes back with the tires rotated, the ticket stated Tire rotation, Dexos and filter and a safety check and no charge. I was pi$$ed, pulled the dipstick and oil was clean and the filter lacked my index mark I always place during installation. Service tech was also upset, I asked to see where the empty oil cans and filter were discarded so I could verify what was stuck in my sump. In the service area were 55 gal drums of 5W-30 and 0W-20 sitting next to one another....pot luck on what was really used. Really bugged me when I got home and so decided to change the oil and filter again from my stock for the most important reason - so I really know what's in the engine, how tight the filter was torqued and assurance that it wasn't accidentally double gasket-ed. No sense complaining since I didn't want another change with Dexos 5W-30 anyway and foolish to believe they would cover the costs of my oil or filter.



I was really nuts to the point of determining for myself what was really in there. Removed the oil from the crankcase then compared flow rate against new stock of 5W-30 for the Traverse and 0W-20 for the Silverado. Done with all oils at room temperature passed through a funnel with wadded up screening in the neck to slow the flow for measurement timing. Well seems the "mystery crap" removed from the crankcase matched the flow rate of 0W-20 not 5W-30 oil. Traverse didn't seem to care having 3 oil changes and filters in under 100 miles, but I slept better.


No sense making an issue of it for $40 because the dealer routinely cuts me many breaks, resulting from many repeat buys, on everything from parts to service to trade ins to sales well below invoice, have even in a pinch had non scheduled work squeezed in the same day without a prior appointment. Just had the 22"s on the '19 Silverado road force balanced and watched it done and in addition based upon my complaint automatically ordered a replacement part and scheduled a new shifter pigtail for Traverse install under the revised TSB for this week.
