2011 traverse transmission problem.

hello my name is shaun, I'm new to the forum. i used to be a mechanic for years but couldnt make any good money at it without opening my own shop so now im a self employed contractor. i still do all my own work but these newer computer controlled vehicles get the best if me. Im not sure this that I'm posting this in the right place but here goes. my 2011 traverse has gone completely haywire! it sat for a week or so and when I got in it to run to the store it started up fine, but then the chimes start going crazy. traction control off, service stabilitrac, parking assist off. the buttons that control them won't do anything. the backup camera doesn't work. the rear door won't open. the gear indicator doesn't move from park or anything. the doors will lock when put in gear but won't unlock when put in park. it is stuck in one gear like 3rd maybe cause it takes a lot to get it moving then doesn't shift. if i go to the settings for the park assist it says vehicle must be in park to make changes. I have an Innova scanner the only code is comes up with is u0101 lost communication with tcm. I'm lost any help would be appreciated. thank you

Re: 2011 traverse transmission problem.

it has 179000 miles on it and 2 weeks prior to this happening it made about a 2000 mile round trip to upstate newyork with no problems at all. the only thing it has ever done is every once in awhile it shutters under load like pulling a hill. if you just jab the gas petal real quick it will shift down and the shuttering stops. it almost seems to me like it doesn't know what gear it is in. it does bang pretty hard going into reverse since this happened. I've read threw all the post similar to this but none of them have this many symptoms.

Re: 2011 traverse transmission problem.

I don't think so, it starts like it always has. I do think it's possibly a ground issue though. just don't know where to start. or possible a sensor on the shifter? it just seems strange that it happened all the sudden. and the backup camera not working when put in reverse and the rear door will only open when in park.and neither of them work. just makes me think it doesn't know what position the shifter is in?

It sounds like you're in Limp In Mode since you have a communication code with the TCM. It's located in the front trans pan. Check fuses and you should check for power, ground and data wire voltage(2.5v on both wires). Also you should have continuity from the TCM to the DLC connector. Concentrate on the trans problem first and the other stuff may get fixed along the way since everything is tied together. Make sure there's no aftermarket equipment hooked up to the data buss wiring.

I'm seeing a few reports of a bad power wire to the TCM right at the connector. Here's some diag that may help:

1. Verify battery voltage to the Red/White wire at pin 10 at the transmission connector.

2. Verify battery voltage is present on the Pink wire at pin 13 when the key is on and when in the crank mode.

3. Verify battery voltage is present on the Dk Blue wire at pin 15 when the key is in the accessory or on position.

4. If OK verify good grounds on the Black/White wires at pin 1 and 18.

5. If OK replace the TCM. Programming is required after installation.

Re: 2011 traverse transmission problem.

whipster, thank you I wasn't sure which wires to test. I tried the unplug and reset procedures for the tcm with no luck. I'll test wires tomorrow. from which side do you count for the pins? also I believe the tcm doesn't know which position the shifter is in, that's why the camera, door locks and rear hatch won't open. they all are only supposed to work while in park.

I'm trying to post a jpg picture of the connector view but anytime I try I get an error, very frustrating:

Re: 2011 traverse transmission problem.

I figured it out, thanks to whipster! after checking all the wires in the tcm connector the #10 pin did not have power. the wire had rubbed on the plastic long enough that it wore thew the wire coating and corroded off. everything is now working except for the rear wiper which I don't think is related to this issue. thanks again

Oh that's great that you found it! Where exactly was the problem? Right at the connector shell or down the harness from there a few inches, ect?

The rear wiper may be a motor or maybe the flex part of the harness. I just fixed a 2010 Camaro that the trunk release motor wouldn't work. It ended up being a broken wire in the wire at the opening. Inside the small 3 wire loom is a plastic straightener/reinforcement and the wire work hardened and broke right at the end of the plastic piece.

Re: 2011 traverse transmission problem.

I have a 2012 traverse LT that did nearly the same exact things as described in the first post. It nearly stranded my wife and I on a country road last night. I could not see anything wrong with the wiring as mentioned above however after moving the harness around the car stayed in lomp mode with the traction control light on steady whereas before it would bounce in and out of limp mode and only flash the TC light. I lost the gear display, locks would go nuts, and the car would violently jerk as it went in and out of limp mode. I have 77k miles on this vehicle and need this to be covered over the power train warranty. I am concerned about the level of service I will get as I recently had to argue with the dealership to resolve my wifes saturn 3-5-R waveplate issue. Anyone else have this issue or know of any TSB on it?? Thanks, Rob
