Question tow haul mode

I have a 2018 Chevy Traverse AWD with a V92 tow package. When I put it in tow mode it goes to AWD. Is it necessary to be in tow mode or can you keep it in drive. I noticed when it is in tow mode it does not shift into 9th gear. When I tow the boat in drive the rpm's drop. Any ideas?

Towing typically unloads the front axle, so going into AWD seems pretty natural to me.

Not going into 9th doesn't surprise me. Towing a 2012 Rockwood Roo 19 (~4000 lbs) with my 2011, it would never go into 6th. Spent most of it's time in 4th, might go into 5th on a good decline. Any little increase in slope would drop it into 3rd. (I'm assuming your pulling something fairly heavy, i.e., >2000 lbs.)

Not sure what you mean by "rpm's drop." Relative to what? For the same speed, if you're not going into 9th, the rpm's should be going up.

The four position drive mode control knob places the vehicle in AWD for all selections except 2WD position.......wheel selection easily verified by using the wheel/pitch/yaw/steering angle graphic in the DIC. Skid and trailer icon positions merely further modify the tranny shift points for increased power or control.

Surprised when placed in trailer mode it even shifts to 8th gear, both 8th and 9th are overdrive gears and not a good idea for use when trailering.
