Timing chain replacement

Ok, so 2012 traverse and the timing chain went out of it and my wife drove it to the point it wouldn’t run or start anymore that it was out of time. So I have everything ready to go and have put the chain on once and got the car running again, however it’s still running like it’s out of time and throwing a code for both cam position sensors on bank 1 (if I remember right) and misfire for cyl 5. So assuming it’s still not Timed,

My question is this, when putting the engine into stage 1 timing should cyl 1 be top dead center? And then align timing from that point? Not really finding much searching this forum or other service procedures I’ve come across. Any help to make sure the engine is timed so I can get it back together would be great! Thank you!

Not really, I’ve watched both of those, doesn’t answer the question I asked. Nothing in there says find TDC before aligning marks.

'Generally" the timing is all computer controlled. There are no TDC aligning, degrees before or after TDC........But, does the manual say anything about marks on the block that should be aligned with the new chain, also, did U change the gears?


The video that rbarrios posted explains about everything U need to know. If not, there are plenty more on U TUBE.

I did change the gears, and yes there are two timing marks, need to align the crank pulley to stage one on the block and than align all marks to the chain on all pulleys on left bank, and than roll engine into stage two and align marks on right bank. Just wasn’t sure if engine had to be TDC before using the marks on the block etc.

When U roll that engine be SURE you roll it slowly and STOP exactly on the mark. Do not pass the mark.


Wont go into the horror story bout the last engine I rolled and went pass the mark & kept rolling.

That horror story might already be there, I truly do not know how much damage she may have done driving it for so long with it being out of time, but please share the story lol.

Doubt if much/any damage done while driving. Anyway, valve job with rings on a 2012 would probably be good.



The "horror" story involved replacing the gears & chain on another vehicle, and rolling the engine over to align the marks.
Not paying attention, rolled the engine over 2 or 3 times.


Then had to go find TDC on #1 cyl., which was a challenge.

Well this was my fear. The engine was rolled a couple times, that’s why I was curious if finding TDC would help. Get me to a good starting point anyway.

OK, I'm back. Been installing about $1800 worth of new kitchen appliances from Lowes.


Anyway, don't know what you have done, but watch the video and install the new chains & gears exactly as shown. "If" it doesn't start it is probably 180 degrees "out of phase". Do it again, as if it was the first time.


If it don't start take 2 aspirins & call me at 10 am in the morning...............Sorry bout that.............an old,old doc. joke.
