Amazed to discover that my GPS Map software was out of date the day I drove the car off the lot and they want $199.00 for an update disk.

That is nothing new unfortunately. My jeep disk is and was out of date when I bought it. If you buy the disk from the dealer or the companies website (not sure who GM uses, never really looked at my disk) they are very expensive. You can get them off ebay for like 80-90 dollars all day, however that is still expensive in my opinion.

I know people in the jeep forum have been able to make copies of the newest version and burn them onto a DVD and they work no issues. I am not sure what the newest version is for GM, I know chrysler's newest version is AE which is newer than AD and so forth.
