I just received a phone call (at 7am) from the wife telling me that as she was getting off on her exit from I-4, she got a display of Engine Power Reduced, a check engine light, and then she said it started putting along at around 10 mph, and something stinks.  This all her description, not mine.  She at first said it smelled like gas, and I kept asking are you sure, you know what gas smells like - are you sure it is gas?  Then, of course, the reply is no I do not think it is gas, something stinks, really stinks like something is burning.  I looked through previous posts (like the one linked to the enclave forum) about engine power reduced, but I guess these are isolated incidents.  Either way, I am having it towed to the chevy dealer and I will keep you posted on the outcome.

I wonder if the CAT converter got severely pluggeg and overheated..

could describe the smells (rotten egg smell- and burned smell)?

Bad exhaust flow im guessing could set the reduced power message to avoid further damage to emissions system...

do you know if the CHECK engine light was FLASHING-- vs solid?

I would look at the water pump for the cause first.

possibly... the smell--- could be the coolant.

Though I would have thought hed have mentioned a DIC warning for Overheat condition of engine...

Sorry for the late reply.  I am not sure if the check engine light was flashing or solid, this was all of my wife's descriptions and no overheat condition.  We did have it towed to the Chevy dealership on Thursday afternoon, and they diagnosed it Friday morning as a bad fuel injector for cylinder #5.  They had the fuel injector in stock, but not all of the associated gaskets needed to accomplish the replacement.  It should be completed today and ready for pick-up this afternoon.  Not really sure what my wife was smelling other than fuel, but who knows (after all she is pregnant)?

Fuel doesn't burn and get pumped into the exhaust it usually ignites in there.  It's a little ruff on the cats when it does that.

Think by DI he is saying direct injection.
Diesel cars have had problems in the USA with their HPFP due to either the poor quality of US diesel or pump issues.
I'm used to be a VW tdi nut.

Yes, Direct Injection.

The HPFP in the N54 and N55 engines in the 335i and other Bimmers are prone to failure and give exactly the symptoms described by the OP here. They are now warrantied for 125K miles.

Diesel tech is very different from gas tech. So are the psi. Let's not cause the op any confusion.

Old in a sense that it's still billions of years old at the base, but not old in the sense that Good Ol Petrol was like 87-89 Octane, and if I'm not mistaken, you need to run atleast 90 octane in that bimmer to prevent pinging, right?
