So I changed my oil. 5503 miles. took a sample- and have mailed it off for analysis.
This engine takes 5.5 qt of oil. Thats how much I put in 1- 5qt jug and half a bottle of the 1 quart...

But I figured id mention a few things so others have some idea in case they plan to change oil.

something I noticed--- and I have learned a lesson.......
BEFORE your open you OIL fill cap... put your face up to the cap- close your eyes and blow at the lid...
Or use one of those Air in a bottle cans used to clean keyboards... You want to blow out alot of the very fine sand that accumulates around the filler cap- if not-- stuff will fall in as you remove the cap (this was not a problem on my other car) I just happened to look in and see....
(I stuck a napking down there to try to remove this)... but this is not good to have happen often...can you see the particles down there???
Those came from me opening the cap... (theyre not metal particles)

Changing the filter on this car-- will many times leave you with a very dirty- oily filter......
I always pulled up in to my driveway- which is at a small incline...
This time I backed it in...so it was technically pointing downhill... not alot- but it is pointing down by a few degrees...
Now loosen the filter- and let it drip out for a few minutes. come back and loosen a bit more---
and what you get-- is a filter that does not get dirty.  the direction it points- appears to make a difference...




But now looking at this pic--- why does the oil still come down like this?
But this is actually BETTER than having the vehicle pointing in the other direction- since my previous 2 oil changes- oil was coming from other places too. (the oil is dripping down-- note the oil drops forming at the top of the pic- I took pic- looking UP at engine)



Once I cleaned up the mess above- (I sprayed simple green and cleaned it up)...
I looked from the top- to try to figure out why the oil drips down like that---
turns out theres a cable in the way- as oil comes out of the oil filter-- it falls on this cable- and well causes it to go where it shouldnt.
In this pic- I moved it forward. but it was originally further back- right under the falling path of the oil...
Next time Im about to drain the filter---- Im going to place the cable- in the position it is in the picture.
Hopefully this allows the oil to drain straight down and into the pan...
note the oil residue on the cables foil cover. the oil should come out of the filter and into that metal tab- and straight down- down to where you see the cardboard (pan was there).. but instead- it 1st hit the cable and then made its way down.



I marked the NEW oil bottle where the 5 qt level was
I drained the oil into a pan- oil level fell between the 5  6  mark.
But I then poured it into the bottle- I spilled some too.
So 5 qts in bottle + some oil in filter + small amount taken for UOA+ some oil left in engine cavities =  very little oil used during the 5500 miles interval.
Im going to say-  I may havr burned 1/4 of a quart of oil for the miles I put on it.

Forgot to mention--- WAL MART- now carries the PF-48 filter!!!

Thanks for the tips.  I saw the PF48 filter at WalMart too.

I wonder if parking the opposite way allows as much oil to drain out from the filter area?  I haven't looked which way the filter is mounted on the Traverse.  Do you think some old oil remains in the block for the sake of keeping the filter clean?  Just curious.

youre right. the oil drain hole does point back.
My driveway is not that steep. Id think maybe 3 degrees
so I dont think its leaving that much stuff in there.

so I dont think its leaving that much stuff in there.
 

I think the # that is tossed around is 10%-15% of the old oil remains in the sump for each oil change.

PF-48 is exactly same as the SuperTech filter (by the same manufacturer?).

recently read that Champion labs was making the filters for ACdelco.

Unless what I read was only referencing that champion was making a particular filter. (in that case I think PF-61  and PF-61E was the filter in question).

the significance of the pic with the filter-- is that its CLEAN-- but thats the OLD filter.  So pointing slightly downhill helps keep it clean.
