Traverse Towing.

We have a 2016 Traverse LT 1 without the V 92 towing package and a 2000 lb towing capacity. Dealer insists it can be upgraded to tow 5200 lbs (as promised before the sale) without effecting the factory warranty. This subject gets even more complicated in 2017 when all models except the LS are rated at 5200 lbs. My question is, how can the 2016 rated at 2000 lbs, non-V 92 tow package magically become able to tow 5200 lbs with only an added hitch? Not any real clear answers found from the dealership or GM, only more questions? .....Help.....

Re: Traverse Towing.

The short answer is that with the addition of only a hitch it can't. The most significant addition in the factory package is the inclusion of extra cooling capacity by way of different radiator with a larger internal transmission cooler. The dealer is simply telling you what he thinks is what you want to hear. Maybe his shop will warranty a related later failure when you tow heavier than 2000 pound loads, but unless you get that in writing, I wouldn't count on it.

You can always add an external transmission cooler to help the issue, but if you're really going to do much towing you may want all the items from the factory package which include a mode switch to change the transmission and alternator programming and an alternate fuse panel for the wiring as well as some minor suspension changes.

Re: Traverse Towing.

I wouldn't tow anything thong heavier than 2k. We have the tow package on our 09 and I pull a 3500-4000 lb camper. Our traverse tows it just fine.

I agree with getting some kind of written signed statement saying you'll be good with the hitch install and towing 5200.

Your traverse should be able to tow 5200 but the trans will more than likely break, or the motor overheats.

Re: Traverse Towing.

Mark:

PM me your email address and I'll send you all kinds of info and pics on adding the tow package. You can probably do it cheaper and better than the dealer will. The only thing really related to the 5200 lb capacity is the cooling. Everything else is just electrical stuff.

So far as I'm aware, unless you have "V92" on the RPO sticker in your glove box, GM will not warrant it for over 2000 lbs. So it your choice what you want to do.

Can't speak for the '17, but in my '12 Chev added additional frame bracing for the towing package as well. The bracing can be seen by dropping the spare, and is not seen on models without towing. This bracing might be included with an OEM hitch, aftermarket??

Not that I'm skeptical, but you're the first person in 5 years to ever say that. I'd like to see a pic of this bracing. Given that all wiring, and now even fuse & relay box, are identical, I find it hard to believe that they would have different bracing.

It's not a different frame. I suspect that they found the frame to be deficient and added these bolt on stiffeners to the towing package. This issue may very well have been taken care of in the refresh that came after I bought mine. I didn't know about them until it was pointed out in a post here on Traverse forum (along with pictures) probably back in '13 sometime.

Hmm. I searched the Towing section for "frame," stiffener," "brace," "bracing," etc. and nothing came up. Guess I'll be looking under my 2017 when it dries out around here.

I never noticed any stiffeners on my 2011, but I wasn't really looking, either.
