NAV DVD Map Read Error Fix

Guys,

As some of you may have seen recently, I was having issues with an Error coming up on my NAV for my 2012 stating "MAP DVD Read Error". This all started when I purchased a copy of the new 14.3 (2015) maps on eBay and it was known to be a copy, but people report they work just fine. The DVD worked great for about 2 weeks and then started throwing this error and the NAV would not read or load it. The strange part is my original 10.3 (2012) MAP DVD would load fine and worked. I tried all the typical solutions, compressed air to get any dust/dirt out of the unit, a DVD cleaner CD, cleaning the DVD's, however nothing worked. I finally found this write up on a Cadillac forum and BAM it worked like a charm. My NAV is reading the new Maps again and it's working great. I found the Laser Eye/Lens on mine was really dirty and when cleaned I had some black on my cloth. The problem is the DVD cleaner discs are not recognized in the MAP DVD player and the lens won't proceed to the correct location for the brushes to clean the eye, so I guess it has to be done manually.

Here's the link for anyone else having this issue in the future and this is a really good write up:

If you have any questions, let me know and hope this helps anyone having similar issues.

Dave

nice write up..

I laughed--- in his pics-- he has a large bottle of Alcohol......

Just yesterday I had a brand new bottle of the same exact brand--- I was cleaning up a sticky remote for the kids tv..... used the alcohol to clean up the sticky stuff on the electronics board.

Re: NAV DVD Map Read Error Fix

[/color]I need to try this soon, but I'd better have the pictures up next to me while I perform this surgery. Another site I looked at for repair clues, one with presumed expert techs, stated that if the "map read error" message came up after inserting a map update DVD, that the reading unit needed to be replaced. I guess some people would rather pay to do that rather than attempt a disassembly operation as is shown in the link.

I enjoy working on computers so it didn't take me but about 45 mins from radio out to radio back in. It's really not a hard job, but take your time and be gentle with the ribbon cables. Do not pull them with plyers and use your fingers as they can easily be broken or the coating come off that can cause signal loss or shorting. Good luck and let me know if you need any tips.

Re: NAV DVD Map Read Error Fix

I disassembled the unit, but it was arranged differently from the Escalade one. I had to drill out a few nubs (from factory punchings) on the inside that prevented enough movement of the CD and DVD readers. It also required slightly forcing out the front part of the frame in order to lift those components out and reach the cable connections. Once able to do that, I was able to follow the procedure in the Escalade link to access the eye and clean it with alcohol and lens tissue.

Reassembled it, then reinstalled it today. Tipped the screen open using the 'eject disc' button on the screen. Inserted my new nav disc (from eBay), but had to push it in all the way because the device didn't grab it as it was supposed to. After it went through its resetting sounds, the screen displayed the message that the update would take "less than 10 minutes" and not to change the position of the ignition key or eject the disc.

It eventually also shows a four-section progress bar, with the first section colored in. But it never gets beyond that. It proceeds from there to briefly display something in JAPANESE, then goes blank and starts over. I can't get any button, MENU, NAV, FAV or power to leave the loop. I can't turn it off, even after removing the key. Had to locate and access the fuse panel and remove the 15a Radio fuse. (The 10a Infotainment fuse did nothing.) Wasn't that a joy, considering where they put that fuse block!

Am I stuck now with having to pull the unit and send it for repair?

Re: NAV DVD Map Read Error Fix

Update: I disassembled the navigation drive in order to remove the disc. Reinstalled the unit, hoping to be able to have all functions other than navigation. Now the radio works, but there are no functions on the touchscreen and no backup camera! The touchscreen displays the message, "Set original CD-ROM" under a line of Japanese characters when any button is pushed. Again, no way to open the touchscreen, although I intended to not put in a disc, even the old one. Also, the radio won't stay off when the power knob is pushed. I am so ready to trash this whole setup!
