2009 Traverse Engine Failure
In November 2014 my husband and I were looking to purchase a more family oriented, all wheel drive vehicle. I had always wanted a SUV instead of a minivan. We came across the Chevy Traverse. I knew that was the vehicle for us! ) We purchased a 2009 Traverse with 66,000 miles on it. We have babied that vehicle. We drove it only when necessary, kept it in the garage, and when it came time, we changed the oil, filled the tires, got recalls taken care of etc.
Then this past year all the issues started happening. We lost the power steering (82,875 miles), so the dealership we took it to, replaced the fluid, housing kit & pump. Then just a few months later (88,794 miles), the engine started rattling, so we took it in and had the timing chain replaced. We also just put on 4 brand new tires and tie rod in June. Now, at just over 90,000 miles our entire engine is having to be replaced. We were driving it home from grocery shopping a couple of weeks ago (in the midst of a blizzard...thanks mother nature!) and we got a notification saying our oil pressure was low and to stop the engine. So we pulled into the nearest gas station and checked the oil and looked for any leaking. The oil level was fine and no leak. So we sat for a bit to let the engine cool and started back home since the light had shut off. Mind you, we live about 20-25 minutes away from our grocery run...it took us that amount of time to get us halfway home. We had to keep stopping when the notification (no oil pressure light, just the notification) came on and letting it cool and start it up again. We finally got close enough to a body shop, we ended up hitching a ride with a nearby police officer and left the Traverse. When the mechanic could look at it, he said it ran for about 30 minutes and when they took it for a drive, it went only 4 miles, locked up and shut off. From that point on it hasn't started.
We are now in the process of getting another GM Engine to replace it but I'm a little nervous about this happening again. I don't like the fact that I could be in the middle of my daily routine, let alone, throw all this money into it (about the total of the original payment for the vehicle) and it happen again or that anything else will happen. I have been researching and have seen other issues happening in Traverses so I am a little leery.
Thank you for your time. I just wanted to make you aware of this situation. We have always been a Chevy family, owning everything from trucks to Malibus & Impalas, but after an experience like this with the Traverse, I'm getting a little nervous about another GM Engine being in my reliable vehicle.
