2009 coolant leak/water pump recall

Friday I took our 2009 Traverse in for an oil change. Also wanted them to check the water pump. Occasionally I have drips of clean coolant on my garage floor and sometimes need to fill my overflow tank. I to have the letter regarding water pump leakage and the extra warranty on this.

The advisor calls me back and said they ran a pressure check- all was fine (but had to add coolant). They charged me $50 for the diagnosis. Saturday morning there was a huge puddle of fresh coolant on my garage floor and the tank was almost empty. Never has it l;eaked like this before!
I called this morning, it is going back in tomorrow. So frustrating.

Water pump has to be the issue right?

There is more with this visit-but lets see if they fix the problem.

Thanks,

bjl

Re: 2009 coolant leak/water pump recall

there have been reports from others--
a leak is present here and there... coolant gets low.

then they have it pressure tested-- and it comes back fine..

then it fails big time withing a few days...

If you constantly have to add coolant you have a problem. The fluid is going somewhere.
On the new puddle on the floor---if the dealer employee filled the overflow tank too full a bunch of fluid could have been pushed out the overflow after you drove it home. The full level on the overflow tank is only about an inch from the bottom of the tank which fools many because you would think it should be at least half way up on the tank.

bayner makes an excellent point about the possible overfilling of the reservoir.

Yes- I have heard of overfilling. Don't think this is the case though. The tank was almost empty Saturday morning.

I usually just keep an eye on the fluids including coolant. My drips on the floor have been occasional until now. In the past I would only have to add coolant probably every 3 months to the overflow tank. The dripping was always in the same spot (front of the engine- closer to the passenger wheel).

Since I got another warranty note in the mail this month, I wanted it taken care of since I do have symptoms of a leak. I was having regular service done anyway. Did not expect what has happened. I wanted it fixed, not misdiagnosed and spending more time and money. This should have been fixed Friday and I should have been charged nothing. Ugh!

Make sure they change it and ask for your $50 back. It is leaking, they should have changed it before you got stuck and had to be towed.

Sure will ask for a refund on the $50!

I drove about 10 miles today. Huge puddle under it again! I will need to add coolant before driving to the dealership in the morning.

Who has the picture of the coolant bottle and the full line being very close to the bottom? Just want to make sure we are at the proper level. There isn't a lot in the bottle when at the full level.

Re: 2009 coolant leak/water pump recall

Just picked up the Traverse at noon today. It was the water pump (no surprise). They did reimburse the money for the diagnostics too.

We will see, hopefully everything is now back to normal. It is raining today so hard to tell.

Thanks to all for your input.
