2009 traverse overheating

My 2009 traverse LS, fwd, started overheating. 70+k mi.

Symptoms:

Operating at 235 +/- 10 degrees.

At idle, fans runs at "high speed".

Fan stays running for 2 min after shut off.

Finding small drips of antifreeze on garage floor, and what appears to be a red water based drip stain under the motor too.

My first inclination was thermostat, but as I read posts in other threads, leaning towards water pump.

How do I eliminate either the thermostat, or the water pump? Also, where can I find a repair manual to guide me? Chitons and Haynes don't have one for this vehicle.

Anyone else run into these symptoms?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 2009 traverse overheating

A bad thermostat isn't going to leak. It might not open or close properly, but it would do so in the sealed thermostat housing.

Where are the drips? Water pump is on the passenger side.

Take it to the dealer...water pump warranty on an 09 should have been extended to 10 year/120K miles.

Drip is on passenger side. From what I've read last night, strongly suspect water pump as the reason for the leak and the overheating.

here you go--- check this out--with pics to help you.

If it is your water pump- you will get it fixed for free under the powertrain warranty.
It was 5 yr/100,000 .. but recently GM extended the warranty on the water pumps to 10 yr/120,000

Re: 2009 traverse overheating

Turns out it was the water pump. Covered by warranty. Was also told by the dealership that there is a recall on the water pump.

Disappointing that chevrolet did not send me a notice on the recall for a part that could cause a catastrophic engine failure.

Re: 2009 traverse overheating

I am glad to have found this forum. Now I hope someone can help me. I own a 2009 Chevy Traverse. I have a lot of the same issues with the water pump. My traverse is over heating. It leaks coolant. I find my self added fluid now once a week. Just yesterday it starting gaging real high so i had to pull over and wait to cool down. Fluid was low so i once i added fluid it's been fine. Prior to all this, A few months ago I heard there was issues with the water pump. I called the dealership and they said it was the seals and to bring it in to check it out. They told me that there was nothing wrong with the seal.. Not sure what to do at this point.

Re: 2009 traverse overheating

have you seen any liquid? any at all..

But next time it gets low..
leave it like that- and take it to another dealer...
GMC or Buick will also look at it....

Tell them you keep having to top up the coolant.

Im thinking youre losing coolant via the weep hole. (slowly)

Re: 2009 traverse overheating

I live in Texas so I am always running the AC. So that always created a leak. But I have noticed 2 spots now leaking. But now I find myself added coolant a lot more frequent. I have had my oil change a few times and nothing there. But maybe I should take it to a different dealership.
