2011 Traverse A/C hissing noise from dash

I have a 2011 Traverse with a tad over 60,000 mi. For the last two seasons, as the outside temperature starts to warm up, the a/c makes a hissing noise inside the cab and the air turns from cool to almost warm. When the hissing noise goes away, the a/c goes back to cooling. It keeps cycling like this over and over. It is worse this year than last. I had the freon changed about 6 months ago. It seemed to help for a while but the problem seems worse now. Any ideas?

I had this very same issue on my 09 Enclave. If you ever have to top off refrigerant, you got a leak! Mine landed up being the front evaporator; but in fact both evaporators landed up leaking along with other stuff that went wrong. Leaky evaporators is a common problem with the AC system - cheap parts! Don't let the dealer tech tell you they cannot find the leak; if they look in the right places with the right tools they should find it.

I too just noticed a hissing noise coming from the dash on my wife's 2011 Traverse with 63,000 miles. I did some looking into it and it sounds like too common of a problem. Does anyone have any I fo on a possible service bulletin or recall? With the number of issues I came across in one day of searching I would hope GM would be on top of this.

In my opinion, if you have had other issues, such as the pump, over heating, etc... then it leads to the AC.. why? because they have to fix these items which in fact affects the AC issues... I purchased a 2010 LT Traverse with (supposedly a 172 pt inspection) in March 2014,

Briefly:

When I brought mine back because I wanted to use the AC in April of 2014 in MN:
I preesed the AC button... it flashed, wouldn't engage...

ALL WORKING AS DESIGNED. SYSTEM WILL NOT TURN ON WHEN BELOW 40 DEGREES IS READ ON OUTSIDE TEMP GAUGE. 1.0 FOR REPLACING LEAKING HOSE.

Well, in January 16, 2014 according to RO 801355 Customer states having to add coolant water pump replacement...
Story: 66632 Pressure tested cooling system and held pressure for over 45 min. Inspected for leaks and traces of dye, and water pump shaft seal leaking. Pressure test cooling system found water pump shaft seal leaking. Replace water pump and refill coolant.

Can someone tell me... is this related?

Thanks much!

I'm experiencing the same thing with my 2011 Traverse. We have only owned it for about 5 months. It is frustrating because it is so loud and seriously builds up in sound and then stops. I recently had a friend in the car who joked that it sounded like pressure building up and it sounded like something was going to explode. After doing research, I agree with you-there are too many stories of this happening. Why hasn't there been a recall for this? Ughhh...so frustrating. What did you end up doing?

Update: Well - brought our 2011 Traverse in to dealer last spring (under warranty) stating the dash was hissing and the ac light would blink and not turn on. The said they did a dye test to find the leak but could not find anything. I did my research and found the condenser in the dash has been known to leak.

www traverseforum com/index.php?topic=3390.0

Well the dash hissed off an on for quite some time but the ac still worked into the fall when we didn't need to use it. This past weekend it was 80 degrees in Wisconsin and went to turn on the AC and the light just blinks. I am planning on bringing it in this week and get this problem figured out - obviously the system is leaking from the dash. The worst part is the refrigerant is leaking into the cabin and being inhaled. We will see if Chevrolet will cover this issue since it has been occurring before the warranty expired.

Re: 2011 Traverse A/C hissing noise from dash

2011 Traverse with 71 k miles and same AC problems as everyone else here. I have seen several threads stating the AC system has dye in it from the factory to help identify leaks. However my dealership says that is not the case and it will cost $170 to evacuate they system and refill with refrigerant with dye to find where a leak is. Am I getting scammed? seems weird to cost that much money just to identify where there might be a leak. And by the way, the water pump went out at the same time, again like many others on here. These things must be related. Fortunately I had 3 months left on the powertrain warranty to fix the water pump, but there are clearly design flaws in the Traverse. Loved it for four and a half years, but the love affair is now over!!

Re: 2011 Traverse A/C hissing noise from dash

All, look under General, as 2-page thread on this and I am a happy Traverse owner again. For me it was the REAR condenser and found with the dye and through the help of this web site. Low refrigerant is the condition that causes the hissss and a leak is what caused the low refrigerant. Just make sure they get all the air pockets out of the cooling system (burping) when put back together. Has a slight incident of overheat, but dealer took it back in and triple checked and re-burped.

The hisses was VERY aggravating!
